Client Objective - to design a better way for people to connect to social services and public benefitsDiscovery:We conducted interviews with case workers and individuals who were either connected to or disconnected from services and benefits. The goal of our research was to better understand trigger points, pain points, and the overall customer journey for someone seeking social services/public benefits. We also spoke with social service experts, as well as analyzed analogous business examples.Synthesis/Ideation to Prototyping:We developed three potential design directions, and piloted one - a SMS text center. We designed and marketed the service, built the prototype, and launched with 10 participants. As business designer, it was my responsibility to determine the business model for the service, and make a recommendation for how best to bring this service to market. I conducted desk research on coaching and customer service companies, as well as interviews with the teams that built NYC 311 and Crisis Text Line. From this research, I developed a set of best practices for customer support lines, a go-to-market strategy for this service, and a cost-modeling tool to assess business model trade offs.
