With a last name like Pasion [pronounced like the English word Passion], it’s a given that I would be passionate about something––my most notable passion being servant leadership. For the past year I’ve volunteered as an EMT in my local community. Although it’s not as glamorous as TV shows like 911 and Station 19 make it to be, I have found fulfillment in being a first-responder in times when I’ve been able to comfort my patients (and their families) during scary and unimaginable circumstances. This is when people skills are paramount to any textbook knowledge. In the seven years that I’ve spent with HOSA-Future Health Professionals, I’ve had the opportunity to serve members on both state and international executive councils, advocate for funding for career and technical student organizations on Capitol Hill, and partner with National Geographic and Cengage to discuss the importance of diversity in the health-science curriculum. In the previous year, I’ve refined my leadership skills as my team and I were challenged with leading HOSA’s 200,000 student membership through a completely virtual year. Using virtual meeting platforms and social media to our advantage, we successfully united and rallied the HOSA spirit among our constituents all over the world.This feat was a test of our public speaking skills, project management, and mental fortitude. However, I couldn’t have achieved these accomplishments without a love for medicine and healthcare–one that was brought up by my own mother. By accompanying her to work almost every day of my childhood, I was exposed to the field of medicine at a young age. Watching as my mother cared for, cleaned, and doted on her geriatric patients as if they were her own family ingrained in me the importance of compassion. It’s with her teachings that I’ve been inspired to be devoted to making a difference in the healthcare field––whether that be in groundbreaking research or simply in the lives of my patients. As a senior at Seton Hall University, I know my future is bright with opportunity and purpose.
