About Laurance Draves

For most of the twenty plus years in IT, I have worked in providing for the onsite IT and telecommunications needs of users at remote locations. The corporate office needs hands on technical support for anything related to IT that they can't remote control. My knowledge base is wide and varied from client side support, network administration, cellular and telecom support and just about anything else that resembles a computer or phone. I am a competent 1st and 2nd level support specialist, LAN field service tech and project manager. I enjoy my role because I am always on the move and get to interact with my peers as well as my clients regularly. I am able to talk tech talk and yet explain things on layman terms. This is one of my most important skills because I spend much of my time learning the needs of clients, working with constraints placed by management and managing expectations on both sides. I then take these elements, find the resources needed to make things happen and then stay with it until it is finished.Specialties: Network and telecom administration, business systems analysis.

IT Director• Did an overhaul of their IT department and systems. Their needs had grown beyond what a consumer grade router and a couple of access points could handle. The school administration had no idea of where to start and a very limited budget. I was able to get them up and running for the 2013-2014 school year for about $20k.o Between salvaging what was left of their old PC’s and purchasing off lease Dell computers, I was able to outfit two computer labs and two laptop carts of 24 devices each for less than $15k.o Did a hardware and software refresh by standardizing the PC images and upgraded all of the PC’s to Windows 10 and MS Office 2019 using the Microsoft Education Open Value Subscription Service.o Installed a cloud controlled Wi-Fi mesh network with staff, academic, VOIP, and guest VLAN’s that covers 100% of both campuses.o Installed interactive projector systems in most of the classrooms using wireless connectivity.o Setup a Google Apps for Education domain for standardized email, apps, virtual classrooms and cloud storage for 300+ students and staff.o Currently working full time at the school maintaining their systems, helping the administration make IT decisions and acting as their help desk.

I have held several positions in this company from Business Systems Analyst, LAN Administrator and LAN Field Service. I am what you would call an IT generalist. For most of the ten years at my location, I have worked alone in providing for the onsite IT and telecommunications needs of 120 users and several other smaller remote locations. The corporate office is more than 700 miles away, so I must serve as the hands on technician for anything related to IT. My knowledge base is wide and varied, but I am not specialized in any one area. I am a competent 2nd level support specialist, LAN field service tech and project manager. I enjoy my role because I am always on the move and get to interact with my peers as well as my clients regularly. I am able to talk tech talk and yet explain things on layman terms.

Utilize Six-Sigma principles to analyze business and technical needs for recommending software and technology to fill process gaps. Plan projects and coordinate in-house and external resources to implement recommendations. - Reduced network maintenance costs by consolidating end to end fiber connections into CAT5E cable plants on a department level, thus reducing the need for expensive fiber NICs and transceivers at the workstation level.- Improve reliability of phone system by implementing VOIP and making use of 100Base-FX fiber distributed throughout the plant to replace aging copper phone lines. Moved phone services from basement to server room and consolidated separate switch and voicemail systems to a centralized media server. This introduced savings by eliminating the need to run new copper lines for phones throughout hazardous areas of the plant that eroded and created electrical interference with phones. Saved over $7k/mo through call and trunk analysis by eliminating unused trunks and phone lines.- Eliminate personal printers and consolidate printer resources to central department locations to save on maintenance and consumables. - Reduce employee workload by utilizing remote IP cameras for fueling operations. - Increased station security by introducing keycard access control systems to control main gate and sensitive area access. - Plan, coordinate and implement final station shutdown plan for all IT resources.
