Summer Intern

Houston, Tx

Working as an intern in the Center for Child Health Research & Policy division, this internship is focused on advocating for policy changes that influence children in Texas. These changes are specifically in education and access to health care. One policy brief that I have helped write is to help schools include more physical activity for students into their school day. This should help children's physical and mental health, as well as their academic status. This internship includes working in close collaboration with the group Doctors For Change in the Texas Medical Center, attending their policy meetings and writing the minutes for them. It also includes site visits and tours to the local food bank, charter schools, hospitals, homeless shelters, and local juvenile penitentiaries, to learn more about ways we can improve every child's life in Texas. Current local health and education indicators are researched and published in a book called Growing Up in Houston. We are taught about the current atmosphere in the Texas legislature, and how we can approach policy changes from different perspectives. We end our internship with a presentation of our policy findings at the beginning of August.
