About Laura Goodwin
I am currently an Associate Professor in Emergency Care at the University of the West of England (UWE), in Bristol. I now work on a variety of projects including work on end of life care, dementia, cardiac arrest, and my specialist area of pre-hospital birth. My previous post as a Research Fellow for the Maternity Theme of the West Midlands CLAHRC involved leading on the roll-out of an innovative training package for frontline midwives, working closely with the West Midlands Ambulance service to develop a new Telephone Triage service for maternity services, supporting the roll-out of the Birmingham Symptom specific Obstetric Triage System (BSOTS) to a number of UK Hospital Trusts, and acting as CI and PI on a Wellcome Trust funded Public Engagement project. My PhD in Nursing and Midwifery was awarded by Cardiff University, where I conducted a focused Ethnography to explore the midwife-client relationship for migrant Pakistani women accessing South Wales' maternity services. The aim of this exploration was to determine the barriers and facilitators to a positive client-provider relationship, and to add to theory around professional-client relationships.Findings expand the relatively small research base which considers the factors behind ethnic inequalities in maternity outcome, and could potentially indicate ways to improve communication and emotional support between midwives and minority ethnic women. I am incredibly passionate about patient safety, psychology, applied research, and inequalities in health outcomes. My previous research within the NHS considered barriers to employment for young adults with learning difficulties, and my BSc dissertation focused on the relationship between false confession and interrogation style. I have always harbored a desire to improve circumstances for vulnerable populations; and aim to use my research skills to do so.In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my daughter, reading, going to the gym, and volunteering. I was editor of the Cardiff University PhD Blog, and the Chair of the PhD Support Group; All Wales Midwifery and Reproductive Health Research Forum. If you have the time, I would love to connect with you.
