My role involves working alongside clinicians and academics to develop and generate research projects that are relevant, and can be applied, to the maternity services in Birmingham. Within this programme of work, I have led on the roll-out of an innovative training package for frontline midwives, and worked closely with the West Midlands Ambulance service to develop a new Telephone Triage service for maternity services. I am also involved with a number of other ongoing CLAHRC Theme 1 projects, both qualitative and quantitative, which includes the role out of the Birmingham Symptom specific Obstetric Triage System (BSOTS) to a number of UK Hospital Trusts. I was recently awarded funding by the Wellcome Trust to run a Public Engagement Project, where I acted as CI and PI.

To assist on a 5-month feasibility study regarding the potential use of an RCT design for a study on waterbirths. This research project was both qualitative and quantitative in nature, and involved speaking to pregnant women and midwives about their perceptions of the use of water in labour, and how this might best be researched. This also included observations of midwives in practice, especially focused on women using water for their labour/birth.

Providing care and support to a young adult with Autism. In this role I provided support and assistance in meal preparation, trips outside of the house, anxiety and stress coping mechanisms, medication management, and social interaction.

Providing care and educational support to young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, within a residential setting. This involved supporting individuals aged between 7-19 in all aspects of their day, including the promotion of independent living, behaviour management and improved communication.

This role was psychology-based, and my main duties included carrying out literature reviews and writing reports. I was also required to present my findings to other members of the team, and to attend weekly development meetings.

Both pieces of research were completed independently (with fortnightly supervision), and involved identifying gaps in knowledge, designing and carrying out interviews, data analysis, and report writing. I was also required to work closely with service users (therefore making all research as accessible as possible), and to present findings to publishing bodies and external companies.
