About Lukasz Kowalski

Hi, I'm Lukasz Kowalski. I'm a Ph.D. research engineer who specializes in the thermal anemometry focused on advanced heat transfer modelling for the solid-fluid interaction. I'm also adept for an operational strategy in chemical nanostructures like MOX gas sensors. I'm passionate about technology and science with high motivation to learn and innovate. My mission is to develop novel smart sensors, methods or systems that improve humans’ live on Earth and beyond. I'm an open-minded person who enjoys working in a great team for multidiscplinary projects giving always 100% of my dedication, knowledge, and experience.As a member of UPC Micro & Nano Technologies group, I made a doctoral thesis on the development of the low-pressure wind sensor for Mars successfully operating within MSL (REMS) & InSight (TWINS) missions and approved by NASA for Mars2020 (MEDA). As a part of the project I proposed for the first time, the intrinsically by the design fully 3D wind sensor. On my postdoc research, I have also worked on a chemo-resistive gas sensor, where, we came up with a new and disruptive method of surface potential control in MOX devices for both time response acceleration and improvement in the limit of detection within the ppb range.The art of designing the complex physical wind sensor is a comprehensive task.To model the fluidic behaviour of the wind sensor, I have performed multiphysics FEM simulations under low Reynolds number regime for laminar, stable and axisymmetric flow. Once envisioned the sensor structure I have designed a CAD model for 3D additive printing fabrication to be integrated with silicon chip and assemble with custom design PCB support. The sensor operates under a constant hot temperature anemometry principle using the Sigma-Delta control loop as a one-bit integrator. We adapt the diffusive representation technique to understand and improve the temporal dynamics of the thermal transducer. Finally, I tested the prototype in the home-made hypobaric chamber and characterize it during external measurement campaigns.I love learning, reading, playing team sports (especially football), cooking for friends & family, travelling and discovering new cultures to understand how the world works. I believe that changing the impossible into possible lies in a man's determination, especially that I was born in Poland the country that gets through its successful transformation.
