Managed a team of engineers building backend infotainment services for Toyota’s connected vehicles. Successfully hired and retained staff by promoting multiple engineers, converting contractors to FTE and participated in dozens of external interviews that resulted in many successful hires throughout the company. Grew my team from three engineers to nine and re-organized to support multiple scrum projects.Helped team deliver on-time customer feature releases by implementing an estimation process, reducing meetings, and encouraging ownership. In parallel with feature work, I identified, launched, and managed multiple projects that significantly improved engineering productivity and reduced technical debt, including a custom CLI tool to save 6+ hours on build times, removal of more than 50,000 lines of dead or redundant code, add automated Jenkins CI pipeline, use Terraform to create consistent environments, and add K6 performance testing that resulted in order of magnitude production throughput improvements. Also helped start a team to refactor a big monolithic service into Kubernetes-based microservices.

Responsible for frontend development of TV clients and content management systems for cruise ships and hotels. Used React, Redux and Electron to build single page applications on native TVs and custom hardware. Also migrated legacy backbone applications to react and maintained several internal NPM libraries and SDKs. Delivered projects include a “door panel” touchscreen for Carnival stateroom guests, interactive kiosk for Holland America’s test kitchen, channel guide for DirectTV set top boxes, and in-cabin TV experiences for Princess Cruise Lines.I also acted in the Solutions Architect role, working directly with customers and multiple internal teams to rapidly bring ideas to proof of concept and stable production code. Responsibilities included writing API specifications, conducting feasibility assessments, estimating work, and resolving technical ambiguity.

Full stack development of customer-facing features on Amazon.com. Lead collaborative projects with other engineers, designers and business experts, including: user research, new feature launches, new email campaigns, service integrations, build optimizations, and latency reductions. Evangelized Ruby on Rails, React.js, and testing practices, created/maintained internal libraries used by dozens of teams, and gave tech talks. Won internal hackday competitions with prototypes including real-time chat, social gifting, mobile flash sales, speech authentication, and movie recommendations.

Lead a skunk-works team of four developers to rapidly prototype technical support web services using Ruby on Rails. Focused on rich and dynamic interactions for multiple target audiences. Managed project roadmap, requirements and expectations for development of CRM, Shopping Cart and Ticketing systems.

Managed development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of HomeSavvi.com’s consumer-facing website. Within the resource limitations of a startup, I worked hands-on with marketing, sales, and the executive team to rapidly design and implement solutions using the php-based Drupal platform and other open source tools. Championed and lead key projects from start-to-finish including: website redesign, online forums, filtering systems, library development and infrastructure upgrades.

Expanded and maintained the Reference Architecture SharePoint application portfolio based on interviews with SMEs, stakeholders and product owners. In total, 168 technology product’s usage standardized enterprise-wide via a formal governance process, enabling cost reduction through reuse, rationalization of contracts, and architectural strategy alignment.

Exploratory research project to develop and test how statistical metrics can be used to identify social roles within online message board communities. Built extensible query and analysis engine for large data sets using Java, JDBC and MySQL. Awarded special presentation for best project and was voted best Informatics poster.
