By training, I am a Biochemist, and my Ph.D subject was the metabolism of astrocytes and neurons studied by NMR. NMR is by far my favorite laboratory technique. Its non destructive and non invasive, it allows to study a wide range of biologically relevant nuclei, and it has the ability to measure 13C isotopomers in the context of carbon labeled experiments. Isopotomeric analysis is also something that fascinates me, because hidden in the istopomeric information are clues to the structure of metabolic pathways and for the quantification of metabolic fluxes. During my days at ITQB, I did a lot of in vivo NMR experiments with cellular cultures (L. lactis, S. cerevisiae, mouse primary astrocytes and neurons, human RBCs). This technique allows us to follow in real time the metabolism of a labeled substrate, the amounts of phosphorylated compounds (like ATP and Pi), and generates incredible time series data.I have since left the wet lab bench and I now dedicate my full time to data analysis in systems biology, mostly in the analysis of metabolic systems. The purpose of my work in this area is the development of mathematical models of metabolic pathways or other biological networks. My hope is to one day be able to have a mathematical model that includes a full metabolic (and regulatory) description of the system together with all the interacting of proteins and RNAs involved.
