• Cost improvement: Optimisation of cost of gold production through the implementation of efficiency improvement / optimisation projects in various disciplines across the value chain. The work includes analysis of mining, processing, general site and G&A costs and KPIs, to identify drivers behind their fluctuations and derive at improvement plans. The role includes managing a team of business data analysts, setting tasks, organising work and monitoring BSN project teams in the field. Ultimately, also to promote continuous improvement in all aspects of the mine operations and aligning BSN operational execution to the site’s strategic goals.• Efficiency improvement: Drive projects across mining and processing to increase productivity; examples include payload increase, shift change duration reduction, power factor increase (power plant) and fuel management systems. The work includes contractor / consultant management, multi-disciplinary project team coordination and motivating capital expenditure needs to execute the projects.

Pit dewatering: Developed a dewatering Excel-based predictive modelling tool to manage dewatering systems against mine plans (inclusive of fifteen modelled criteria); designed a short-interval control pump availability and utilisation system, achieved prioritisation and alignment of several labour issues with HR; presented the 2020 dewatering strategy directly to the Nordgold CEO; developed thirteen new SOPs with continuous coaching to 49 local employees in the Dewatering Team; set up > 30 continuous improvement initiatives to improve pump availability and utilisation (for a fleet of 28 diesel and electrical pumps), strengthened the relationship between Dewatering and Mobile Maintenance Departments with continuous field audits, reporting and KPI feedback.

Profit improvement: Facilitated the generation of continuous improvement ideas and coordinated delivery of the final 2017 all-in sustaining cost (AISC) of $796/oz (against a budget of $822/oz) and 2018 AISC of $930/oz (budget of $956/oz); developed tools for effective target setting management; KPI management; managed a 2018 pipeline of 58 initiatives ($59.2m benefits evaluated).Training and coaching: Built business improvement capacity at the mine; trained and saw fifteen local Guinean employees through the business improvement process (on-the-job formal training as well as coaching in their role as implementation facilitators to support the BI Manager) for three years.Management system improvement (wiring): Improved operations management with effective decision-making capability through KPI review processes; developed value driver trees for rapid analysis of performance (cost levers and operational metrics); improved communication and sharing information and data by setting up feedback loops, visual action boards and action trackers.

Pit dewatering: Delivered successful pit dewatering of > 20 open-cast pits; enhancing mining productivity over a six-year period (2016: 13.5 bank cubic metres mined vs. 13.4 BCM budget); delivered numerous hydrogeological assessments; efficiently tracked and controlled capital and operational budgets for pit dewatering; trained a local hydrogeologist and technicians.Water supply: Provided groundwater-sourced potable supply to mining camp; developed a re-use system of groundwater from pit dewatering systems for processing demand; developed a water balance for catchment level; analysed water quality data for safe usage of water; developed and implemented groundwater monitoring networks.Community water: Worked with surrounding local rural villages, engaged with stakeholders in siting of borehole positions; analysed water quality and reporting; oversaw contractor tender processes and drilling operations; managed water systems between mine wide operation and surrounding villages.

Projects: Developed water management plans, conducted private and industrial water supply assessments, implemented water use licencing applications, carried out environmental impact assessments; project-managed a R2.1 million Pebble Bed Modular Reaction Demonstration Power Plant (PBMR DPP) Project; authored and / or co-authored > 80 consultancy reports.Business development: Generated an annual R3.5 million project over four years (2007-2011) as the lead consultant and project manager for the Overstrand Groundwater Development and Management Programme, for Overstrand Municipality, Western Cape.

Projects: Executed specialist groundwater assessments for new regional landfill sites for the City of Cape Town, upgrading of wastewater treatment plants, upgrading of PetroSA’s refinery near Mossel Bay, audited groundwater monitoring programmes, conducted baseline monitoring for the Berg River Dam construction project, as well as multiple country estates, etc.Training network: Selected as an Assistant Network Coordinator of the Groundwater Training Network for FETWater (Framework Programme for Research Education and Training in Water), initiative of Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and Water Research Commission in South Africa (networking training received in Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany).
