The opportunity to purchase a dormant concrete inspection business appeared in 2018. I and a partner bought it after a period of due diligence of this companies status, surveying potential clients and observation of how similar firms conducted their business. As we are a company of only two, our first several months consisted of designing and building a working infrastructure that focused on efficiency and eliminating of non-value added activities. ACI & NECEPT certs followed.My business partner and I are both mechanical engineers with extensive practical experience, organizational skills and an entrepreneurial spirit. After completely disassembling our testing instruments, evaluating each individual component, repairing/replacing as necessary and calibrating each, we gained an understanding of how they work but more importantly, 'why' they work. Knowledge of LEAN Manufacturing principles and the Toyota Production System (TPS) guided the design and construction of our mobile testing lab. This asset allows Keystone Inspection & Testing Services, LLC to operate totally independent of any utilities at the worksite regardless of its remote location. We believe that our ability to function in this manner with total transparency and with near real time communications with our client, the concrete batcher and the responsible site supervisor/engineer serves us well.We have found this industry rather traditional with many contractors and agencies comfortable in their current relationships with inspection and testing services such as ours. We have worked hard at contacting potential clients and when we succeed in providing our services, our performance has been judged extremely favorable based on repeat business.Moving forward we anticipate an accelerated growth pathway. Our strong commitment to unbiased transparent testing and inspection coupled with rapid data access is our touchstone and in our opinion what makes us the logical choice for concrete testing.

The Allied Club is a rather unique institution that has been in continuous operation as an incorporated entity since the repeal of prohibition. Prior, it was rumored to be a 'speakeasy'. As a private club, the Allied Club offers a wonderfully restored 131 year old facility and hosts events and family activities for its members.Manager functions include:1.) Day to day and strategic financial management.2.) Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board compliance.3.) Membership roster management.4.) Facilities and grounds maintenance and repair.5.) Inventory management.

I began my Pearle Vision tenure as a part time sales associate to augment my income while caring for my elderly parents. The Indiana, PA store allowed me to leave at a moment's notice as my situation often required. As time went on and is my nature I learned every function from insurance filings, optometric equipment repair/maintenance to corporate marketing. To reduce costs, I maintained and repaired when necessary the store HVAC, plumbing & electrical systems.As Pearle Vision's business model evolved from corporate owned stores to individual franchised locations, my role became a bit more formal. Managing computer systems and associate training of point-of-sale software were added to my responsibilities.After the first franchise owner was arrested and convicted of insurance fraud across 7 states, the current owner stepped in. This new franchisee assumed control all of the previous owner's stores and continued to acquire additional Pearle Vision stores and independent practices. I was forced into an acting store manager position after the sudden departure of the Indiana, PA store's long-time manager. While not aspiring to a position in retail store management, I modeled this store's operations as a manufacturing facility and put into place the practices of LEAN Manufacturing and of the Toyota Production System (TPS). I created written procedures from everything from making change, processing vision exam data, filing the many insurance provider claims to accepting materials into inventory & pricing for sale. Poka-yoke is a Japanese term that means 'inadvertent error prevention' and its principles guided my procedure composition. Associate training resulted in the Indiana, PA store moving from 'middle of the pack' to first in profitability. The Indiana, PA store's telling metric of patient glasses remake rate at almost zero in large part accounted for it's top third in sales ranking even though it was one of a few not in a major metropolitan location.

Fisher's Indiana, PA facility had a small engineering staff. Two electrical engineers, two mechanical engineers, three technicians/students with a manager. As such, we had to wear many hats, from design, development, drafting/documentation, production management, third party inspection liason, marketing and customer/technical service. Planning of activities was wise but flexibility was a crucial quality as work was fluid and dynamic.

Intercon was threatened with receivership, plans for liquidating the assets and being shut down when I was brought in as a Manufacturing Manager. The new Plant Manager thought the company's situation was hopeless and moved on. I was pushed into the Plant Manager role and with nowhere to go, I began learning what went wrong and began to make improvements on both tactical and strategic levels.The first couple of months were consumed with analyzing business relationships, creating work instructions for the many processes employed, and basically buying time. Improvements were steady and measurable. At the sixth month, we broke even and in seven months turned a profit. Principles learned and developed in earlier positions were put to the test and proved viable in a high pressure environment.Intercon still exists and thrives.
