Moved to the Amazon Fresh/Grocery organization to bring online food delivery to the world. Started out in a Software Manager role owning the checkout & post-ordering experience, before switching to pre-checkout (search, browse, personalization, navigation, etc) and being promoted to Director in the process.I took this role because I'd seen companies try to make the online grocery space work in the past but no-one had really cracked it, and I figured that if anyone could it would be Amazon. A few years of steady growth provided positive reinforcement for this decision, until March 2020 when everyone on the planet suddenly wanted their groceries delivered. If working on Prime Video taught me how to scale, selling groceries at Amazon during a pandemic taught me how to scale *right now*. Fun times.

Lead several engineering teams who owned transactional video-on-demand (TVOD), payments, media library, and video rights management. Helped launch "Amazon Instant Video" in the US, UK, DE, and JP (which later became "Prime Video"). This included building a data migration pipeline to allow customers to use LOVEFiLM (Amazon's UK VOD subsidiary) right up until launch and still have all their data in sync on the new service.This is the role that introduced me to Amazon, combining my passions of film and technology to launch a ground-breaking new service while the rest of the world were still shipping DVDs.

Joined to help transition the company from a print business to an online business, which turned out to be an interesting organizational challenge as well as a technical one. Led a scaled-agile transformation across the 40+ person engineering team, built a new content management system to support Time Out's 50+ websites worldwide, and launched the Time Out Card: a short-lived but much-loved discount card.

Hired as an engineer and quickly transitioned into a management role as the team grew beyond a handful of people. Rapidly scaled up the team and software to support the tens of millions of users of middle-school phenomenon Moshi Monsters, an MMORPG with an undercurrent of curio collection and stealth education. Gained valuable, battle-tested knowledge of how to scale software architectures and software teams in the wake of rapid growth.

Back to building cool products alongside great people in this role. Worked in a variety of languages building out a print-on-demand book publishing platform to rival that big river company. Built an in-house credit card payment processing system before Stripe was a thing. This was also the first role in which I worked stateside and the first working fully remote, both of which I fell in love with.

Spent six months as a suit, consulting on ERP systems for banks. This role wasn't what I hoped it would be, and taught me to recognize the things that I value the most (one of which, as it turns out, isn't "billable hours"). I did meet some great people in this gig though, which happens to be one of the things I do value.

First job after leaving university. Laid off after 3 weeks, then hired back a month later and asked to lead a new team. The real world is weird, huh?Led a team of 5-to-15 engineers to rebuild the company's primary product (Payroll SaaS) from in-production prototype (no, seriously) to scalable, standards-based product. Wrote a massive amount of Java code while also making every classic engineer-turned-manager mistake in the book (before reading said book). This is the job that ignited my passion for leadership, and taught me how much I needed to learn to be great at it.

Spent a year out from studying to work in the industry and learn everything university doesn't teach you. Here I learnt the boundless value of mentorship and that the Ballmer Peak also applies to tea (statistically: 2.5 cups). Wrote a lot Java & PL/SQL to put the UK's 1901 census data online. Also learnt C and C++ to ship a digital version of the Oxford English Dictionary on "CD-ROM".
