About Lam Mach, Ph.D.
I received my B.Sc. degree in Engineering Physics with a focus on Applied Optics from the Colorado School of Mines in 2016. At Mines, I had the opportunity to pursue research work in the lab of Dr. Charles Durfee, allowing me to gain invaluable exposure to the field of femtosecond optics. The work, alongside Dr. Alex Wilhelm (now at Mines), focused on the design and construction of a novel pulse stretcher and compressor, as part of an upgrade to the inhouse, preexisting Ti:Sapphire CPA system. The experience there further propelled me to the Ph.D. program in Optics & Photonics at CREOL, the University of Central Florida (UCF).My first two years at UCF was spent conducting research work in the Florida Attosecond Science and Technology (FAST) center, alongside Dr. Xiaoming Ren (now at Lam Research) and Dr. Yanchun Yin (now at KLA-Tencor) under the guidance of Dr. Zenghu Chang (Physics, UCF). There I helped advance the construction of a novel mid-IR CPA system based upon the recently developed Cr(2+)-doped ZnSe gain material. The system is capable of producing 88 fs, 2.3 mJ, 2.5 μm pules at the repetition rate of 1 kHz, intended to drive high-harmonic generation in gaseous media for the generation of attosecond pulses in the EUV spectral regime.I then briefly moved to the group of Dr. Ayman Abouraddy (CREOL, UCF), looking to further expand my areas of expertise. My work centered upon a newly developed class of diffraction-free beams, referred to as the spacetime wavepacket. These wavepackets are femtosecond pulses that have been engineered to possess an extended degree of spatiotemporal coupling, featuring an intensity peak (i.e., the spacetime wavepacket) on their spatial profile whose width remains invariant over long propagation distances - ergo, diffraction free.In the Spring of 2019, I made a permanent transition to the lab of Dr. Ivan Divliansky (CREOL, UCF) and Dr. Leonid Glebov (CREOL, UCF and OptiGrate, IPG Photonics). Under the supervision of Dr. Divliansky, I've been conducting advance research on the applications of customized volume Bragg gratings in passive and active optical systems, for spectral and spatial beam-control. My research spans the holographic construction of these specialized Bragg gratings to their final implementations in various optical systems, both active (e.g., solid-state laser oscillators and amplifiers) and passive (e.g., pulse stretcher and compressor). These works culminated into the final Ph.D. dissertation that was successfully defended on May 12, 2022.
Listed skills include Research, Optics, Nonlinear Optics, Data Analysis, and 26 others.
