About Larry Minikes

A pioneer and early leader in consumer electronics, wearables and neurotechnology, I have been designing and building tech devices starting when I was a child in the 60's. I became professionally involved in consumer electronics in the early 80's and first entered manufacturing and product development in the mid-eighties. Upon discovery of the budding neurotechnology field in 1990, I have been responsible for the development of a number of successful products in the health and wellness arena. I developed a passion for transformative technologies nearly thirty years ago and remain so to this day.As an entrepreneur, community activist, product developer, and consultant, I work to help people attain a healthier, better quality of life helping them with stress and sleep issues. In my personal life, giving back to our community, I have a long-term commitment toward protecting and preserving our local ecological heritage.

  • Marin Biomass Collaborative
    Steering Committee Member
Marin Biomass Collaborative Apr 2020 - Present
    Marin County, California, United States
Ours is a cutting edge climate change-inspired project seeking economically feasible ways to sequester carbon. Our Project will complete a Marin Biomass Study, funded by the governor's Office of Planning and Research (OPR), to analyze the wide range of existing and potential pathways for processing biomass and converting it into useful products in ways that are both economically sound and ecologically responsible. It will do so in a collaborative manner that helps build cooperation among the public and private stakeholders that operate and oversee the biomass utilization economy, so that optimal solutions can be quickly implemented. The Marin Biomass Study is motivated by two climate-related realities: the increasing risk of wildfire, and the recognition that processing and landfilling biomass can emit large amounts of greenhouse gas, including methane, a particularly potent driver of climate change. The Study will facilitate an emerging biomass utilization economy in Marin County, helping the public and private sectors collaborate on long-term, high-value solutions for managing the biomass produced by wildfire hazard reduction activities throughout the County, in coordination with managing municipal green cart organics. Such recovery solutions can support new economic activity, offset biomass processing costs, and produce low-carbon alternatives to conventional biomass and energy resource management, while substantially reducing the risk of wildfire. The Marin Biomass Collaborative is undertaking the Study to improve the processing of the biomass in an urbanized coastal region of California comprised of towns and cities, mixed woodland, and preserved open space and agricultural lands. The Study will therefore focus on practices and infrastructure that can make productive use of both the woody materials resulting from wildfire prevention activities and the source-separated and mixed organic materials generated from the built environment.

  • A/V Stim, Llc
    President
    A/V Stim, Llc Nov 2002 - Present
    San Rafael Ca
A/V Stim was established in 2002 with the release of our first MindSpa Personal Development System®. As founder, I have worked tirelessly to continually improve and upgrade our products. As the chief product developer, I bring over 40 years of corporate retail management, marketing and product development experience to MindSpa.Entering the field of auditory/visual stimulation (AVS) two decades ago, it was a time when this technology was in its infancy and leds were still very new technology. I became fascinated with biofeedback in the early eighties as the Advanced Consumer Electronics (ACE) buyer for a 22 store SF Bay Area department store chain, The Emporium, but quickly understood the limitations of biofeedback. When I discovered the early versions of these light and sound devices, I decided health and wellness is where I want to be and become part of this industry. Currently we are in stealth mode focused on wearable biometrics / wearable computing. My team and I are working on several advanced projects for clinical and consumer use we expect to release late this year that will bring wearables to the cloud. Stay tuned, details to follow!
  • Marin Municipal Water District
    Member, Infrastructure Citizen'S Advisory Committee
Marin Municipal Water District Dec 2018 - Jun 2019
    Marin County
Principally involved in helping to get a $233M Water District's 10-year Capital Improvement Program (CPI) and budgeting process approved in May 2019. Members of this committee include our Marin County Fire Chief; Director of Engineering, Marin General Hospital; Tiburon Town Council Member; former San Anselmo City Manager and distinguished members of the public with decades of combined experience in the issues we are facing. Aging water infrastructure is common across the country. It is a 21st century reality. How to pay for these necessary upgrades, and when to perform them is the challenge municipalities are facing. We are reviewing the needs of our aging distribution system consisting of 900 miles of pipelines, 128 tanks, 97 pump stations, two water treatment plants, 21,600 areas of watershed and 7 reservoirs. The distribution system in Marin is the most complex of any in the SF Bay Area. Just in tanks and pump stations alone, MMWD manages more than five other similar or larger sized neighboring water agencies combined. This is due to the county's unique, hilly topography. Unlike MMWD, a number of these other comparative water agencies import all their water and do not have their own watersheds to maintain. In addition to the need for resiliency in our distribution system, we are focusing on watershed resiliency, its infrastructure, wildlands and fuels management. This is in light of climate change and the tremendous destruction we witnessed of our neighboring communities, particularly over these past two unprecedented, history-making fire seasons. Complicating conservation efforts is the presence of over 1,000 rare and endangered species identified on district lands. This is also home to some of the last surviving Coho Salmon on Earth. These recent events so close to us are a real wake up call to many in our community. The message is coming through loud and clear. It is a call to action. Or, accept one's fate.

  • Mt Tam Jam
    Executive Director
Mt Tam Jam Jan 2012 - Nov 2013
    Mt Tamalpais, Mill Valley Ca
The Tamalpais Conservation Club is proud to be celebrating its 100th year of service to those communities as Guardian of the Mountain. For the past century, its mission has been to preserve and protect Mt. Tam in innumerable ways. But our milestone is more than a celebration. It is a signpost to changing times that require new and creative calls to action.I conceived, founded and was director of Mount Tam Jam: A Benefit for the Mountain, on behalf of the TCC, held at the historic 4,000 seat Mountain Theatre, sitting 2000' above SF Bay and the Pacific, on June 22, 2013 over Summer Solstice weekend during the super moon. This was the first major musical concert event on the slopes of Mt. Tam in over four decades. Fully sanctioned and supported by Mount Tamalpais State Park, the event’s goal is to raise sorely needed financial resources for the Park and in so doing create ancillary benefit to other Marin County State parks. The event came about thanks to a forward-thinking State Parks employee suggesting we celebrate our centennial by doing something in the amphitheater. From that humble seed is growing a full-scale music festival. I am proud and humbled to be part of this great event.
  • Tamalpais Conservation Club
    President
Tamalpais Conservation Club Feb 1993 - Oct 2013
    Ross, Ca
I was humbled and also very proud to have been the longest serving president in the 101 year history of the TCC serving a record six terms. I have since left and now serve on the board of the venerable Marin Conservation League.Since 1912, the Tamalpais Conservation Club has served as the Guardian of Mt Tam here in Marin County. Generations of club members, who appreciate the mountain for its scenic beauty, have helped to protect Mt Tam from commercial exploitation. Thanks to the many who have participated, today the slopes and spurs of Mt. Tamalpais remain the home to a great diversity of plants, birds, and animals. The TCC is dedicated to preserving the wild and scenic character of Mt Tamalpais, and the retention of these lands as a public park and preserve.
  • Synetic Systems
    Vp Sales And Marketing
    Synetic Systems 1990 - 1999
    Greater Seattle Area
This was a manufacturer of light and sound brainwave entrainment devices. When I joined as a sales rep originally, it was a garage shop operation. I built it to a multi-million dollar operation before leaving to start my own venture. I successfully placed our products around the world and in local major catalogers including Hammacher Schlemmer, Sky Mall and the Sharper Image. I helped conceive of and develop new products in my time there. I only left because of a difference of opinion in where the company needed to go. Change is good! I started A/V Stim, now a competitor to my old company. It was one of the best moves I have ever made!
  • Access Marketing Group
    Principal
    Access Marketing Group 1988 - 1994
    San Francisco Bay Area
My sales rep company at the time. I represented a lot of lines during this period including Commodore Computers. I was named to their advisory board. I also represented one of the earliest laptop lines, Datavue Computers. This was when it was two floppy drives, no hard drives and either reflective screens, no backlighting, or plasma displays, retail $3,000. The good old days! I also represented a number of home goods lines such as Henry Rosenfeld Luggage (Gloria Von Furstenburg, Pierre Cardin, etc.), several rug lines and imported dozens of containers of wicker furniture for warehouse clubs.
  • Casio Usa
Western Regional Sales Manager Audio Visual
    Casio Usa 1986 - 1988
    San Francisco Bay Area
After leaving the electronics job and doing world-wide travel the following 2.5 years in my rug job, Casio came and offered me a position in their new division. While I was there, I learned how to be a competent salesperson and the ins and outs of working with seasoned sales professionals. I stayed with the job for two years but wanted to spread my wings and start my own company. I became an entrepreneur before the term was even in common use.
  • Emporium Capwell
    Senior Buyer
    Emporium Capwell Nov 1973 - Mar 1986
    San Francisco Bay Area
I was an internal hire. I started out as temporary inventory help and was one of two people out of over 100 that kept on. Over the years, I was promoted through the ranks and on five separate occasions worked for former bosses who rehired me into more senior positions as I climbed the corporate ladder. Buyer for Advanced Consumer Electronics from 1982-84. I came in as a rookie buyer to replace a recently promoted senior buyer who was running 80% back to back increases. In my first year I doubled the business (96%). In the second year I doubled it again (108%) and substantially increased gross margin at the same time. I grew our business from being the #7 US department store sales to passing both Macy's SF and Macy's NY in Casio sales (#1 and #2 at the time) to move into the #1 spot. The advantage of working at the Emporium as buyers is that we were trained and encouraged to run our own businesses - to become real merchants. This is far different than most corporate retail settings, particularly today, where buying is done by committee with the buyer relegated to the minor role of product selector. Senior Buyer for Oriental Rugs for a $15M business working in nearly 24 countries around nearly all parts of the globe. With my great success in electronics, the Senior Home VP/GM asked me what I would like to do next. I said I would like to get a little color, fashion and and fabric along with some more travel in my background. Two weeks later I was named the Oriental Rug Buyer. It was one of the three best buyer jobs in the company of 104 buying positions and a staff of 22,000 people because we got to travel all over the world to exotic locations. The company kept promoting me, adding the Broadloom Carpet and Lamp and Pictures Depts. to my list of responsibilities. By the time I decided to enter the wholesale side of the business, I had several assistant buyers and clerical staff under my supervision.
  • Preferred Sounds

    Preferred Sounds 1967 - 1972
    Rye Ny
These days, how many US citizens can really say they started their careers working in a factory? I have always worked from the first time I legally could. My first real job (other than as newspaper boy @12 years of age). This was my part-time after school and full-time summer job. I was a kid working in a factory that produced cassettes and 8-tracks for the Capital Record Club. We were like one ethnically diverse, happy family. I had at least ten adopted moms there! I am filled with many happy memories of those days.I got to do a little bit of everything there. Looking back at sweeping floors, emptying and loading trucks, working shrink wrap and labeling machines and so forth, it set the foundation for my life yet to come. During the same period, on weekend and in the summer I worked on a real family farm in the Catskill foothills of Upstate NY. To this day it was by far physically the most demanding and some of the most satisfying work I have ever done!
