Serve as leader for the newly-established Office of First and Second Year Experiences and Transitions. Create signature experiences through partnerships/programming that help facilitate a first and second year of academic integration, developing a student’s sense of self, and opportunities to deepen social engagement and developing social/cultural capital. Compile, interpret, and manage student data utilizing various data collection systems, portals, and processes to identify trends, potential needs, and other markers. Engage VCU faculty from all colleges/schools as student success collaborators. Provide leadership and guidance in curriculum development including developing and delivering instructor training and faculty orientation programs. Regularly assess the program and evaluate instructors to identify the student learning outcomes are meeting expectations and achieving goals of student success. Convene and conduct monthly faculty meetings. Serve on University College’s Curriculum Committee and collaborate with campus partners to continually improve courses and first and second year student experience.

The LDWOC student success course was designed to empower women of color to break through the barriers that impedes their professional growth. Through in-depth discussions and activities on topics related to professional development (attire, verbal and written communication), finding one’s voice, stereotypes/microagressions, and community/civic engagement, students are able to build their leadership brand, set SMART goals, understand the importance of giving back, build positive relationships with their peers, and get acclimated to the institution.

The LeadHERs Mentor Program is designed to assist first-year LDWOC students in reaching their academic potential in the transitional first-year of college and to help students to get acclimated to VCU. The program provides a platform for mentors and mentees to exchange dialogue about campus life, balancing academics and social life, and developing connections between upperclassmen and new students.

Member of the University Academic Advising (UAA) Leadership Team. Provide leadership, strategic direction, and administrative oversight for unit operations and advising programs. Serve on departmental, school and university committees that serve as opportunities to further the mission of University Academic Advising. Coordinate with UAA Leadership team to provide cross-training opportunities for other advisors in the University Academic Advising Center. Assess advising program goals and outcomes. Coordinate with Office of Admissions to participate in recruitment activities. Teach students how to manage the college experience, navigate the University, make informed decisions, and assume responsibility for their academic success. Identify and assist struggling or at-risk students. Support the implementation and use of advising technology, such as the Student Success Collaborative. Use the Navigate advising platform to establish targeted student populations on team caseloads for more intensive advising.

Advise 200+ first-year (undeclared, declared, Humanities, STEM, Pre-Health, Business Foundations) diverse (military, underrepresented, international, first-generation, at-risk) students in a successful path toward a focused, productive educational experience; provide guidance and training for new advisors as they transition into their roles; assist students in identifying innate interests, abilities, and skills for the establishment of academic goals; assist students in identifying innate interests, abilities, and skills for the establishment of academic goals; instruct students in management of the total college experience which challenges students to make informed decisions, assume responsibility for academic success, and embrace effective communication skills; use of various assessment tools, identify, assist, and connect struggling or at-risk students with appropriate campus resources and advising platform to identify targeted student populations for more intensive advising; conduct recruitment initiatives (Open House, Orientation, Preview Day); counsel and keep advisees abreast in academic standings/policies/procedures, progress in completing degree requirements, and develop appropriate academic plans for scholastic achievement; keep students abreast of significant policies and procedures, to include but not limited to study programs for diverse student statuses, financial aid/scholarships, FERPA, foreign language and math placement test requirements/guidelines, and AP/IB/CLEP/DE credit evaluation; facilitator for professional development advising workshops.

Provided oversight, assistance, and guidance to students in student life programs, clubs, and student activities, to include conducting related training and orientation sessions; coordinated and facilitated monthly and weekend activities to foster student engagement; managed the civic engagement and service learning components of Student Life; provided assistance as needed in other Student Affairs areas including advising and registration activities.
