Working on projects in the field of coastal systems (tidal basins, estuaries and open coasts). My main focus is on the hydrodynamics, sediment transport and morphodynamics of these systems. Many of my projects are in close collaboration with ecologists. For these projects, I make use of my broad experience in numerical modelling, fieldwork and data analyses.

Research position on the physical processes and management of estuaries. Part of the KNAW-funded research project "Coping with Deltas in Transition", in collaboration with the East China Normal University (Shanghai).

PhD study entitled “Intertidal Flats in Engineered Estuaries”. In this PhD project, I studied intertidal areas — flats that emerge every tide in estuaries — which provide valuable ecological values. The focus was mainly on understanding how natural processes (tidal flow, waves, storm events) affect the morphological evolution (shape/height) of these areas and what the implications of human interventions are (e.g., consequences following storm surge barriers and dredging activities). A special focus was on extracting implications for system management strategies, for example, by nourishing sediment on these areas to mitigate negative consequences of human interventions.My dissertation – Intertidal Flats in Engineered Estuaries – is available through http://doi.org/d566

Fundamental research on the modeling of overwash morphology during extreme storm events (e.g., hurricanes).
