Leading the Classic Games Server team, I played a vital role in taking 20-year-old services designed for a different era and making them cloud ready and able to be deployed fully automated and with no downtime. In doing so I was able to help ship StarCraft Remastered to great success and architected one of the most modern server stacks utilizing cloud, LBAAS and VM’s to be able to effortlessly scale and target 5 9’s of availability. Also, during this period, I was point on hiring to fill out the server team with both software engineers and site reliability engineers to be able to take the foundation server architect and expand it for other projects plus lead the charge on using docker and Kubernetes to improve deployment processes. Prior to this I originally joined the Battle.net game service team and my early responsibilities were to reform the build tools and test tools. Shortly thereafter, I switched to the Infrastructure and DevOps team where I'm responsible for managing and maintaining software that runs on every server and allows for command and control of Blizzards infrastructure and services plus monitoring and reporting. Selected Accomplishments: * Launched new server stack for StarCraft Remastered * Hired a full team of Software Engineers and Site Reliability Engineers * Built a stable foundation based on cloud technologies that can be used for other projects * Developed client library allowing easy integration into game clients for online services * Ensure best security practices and anti-cheat technologies are deployed and effective * Member of Database Counsel in order to improve knowledge and tools * Presented by monthly presentations to broader team on server topics * Heavily influenced new test framework to allow ease of use and scalability * Improved performance, memory usage and reliability of core product by significant factor

Founded in 1999, LindenLab are the creators of shared space and have released the hit game SecondLife, which was a pioneer and game changer on how virtual reality games are created and how the users were engaged inside these alternate worlds. Looking to diversify, LindenLab acquired Desura in June 2013 and brought myself on as part of the purchase where my role was similar to that at Desura, maintaining and developing the client. In addition, since the client has been open source, following the model of SecondLife’s game client, I had the added role of interacting with the open source community and ensuring transparency, direction and cooperation with other developers outside LindenLab. Selected Accomplishments: * Integrated development processes with existing company processes while improving on them * Converted a project to be used companywide on 3 products * Created tooling for QA to improve turnaround time and reduce overhead

Iress is a software company that supplies share market and wealth management systems across the globe for clients ranging from the big banks to small brokers and everything in between. The two main products are IRESS, a trading front end application with a transaction engine back end that can place orders on over 15 stock markets and many other order management systems and XPLAN which handles risk and wealth management for financial planners.I joined the Trading Interfaces team which is responsible for applications that connect to markets and order management systems to place orders for the other Iress components. After 3 months I spear headed a project to automate and simplify software installs across the global using a central website (i.e. Australia could remote install and upgrade software in Canada and South Africa) which reduces operation costs and ensures a more reliable client experience by ensuring upgrade success and the ability to audit and monitor upgrades on a large scale. My current responsibilities is to manage the software installer project while implementing and influencing the design and architecture of the Trading Interfaces while managing a team member.

Turret Builder (Software Engineer)

Desuranet

Desura Pty Ltd owns and operates a content distribution platform (much like the app store for iPhone) called Desura, the aim of which is to provide gamers with a dependable interface to provide content they want to play in the quickest and easiest way possible. At its heart is a native client that works on both Windows and Linux which can serve (and update) games, mods and add-ons by the click of a button. My role on the project, as lead software engineer, was to design and implement the client starting with Windows and recently ported to Linux. This involved creating the initial prototype (in a mix of C# and C++) and moving on to implement the final working product in C++ while making sure to follow good design patterns (such as MVC, inspector, facade, factory, RAII) and windows programing guide lines. The most important aspects that I implemented are; smart download system that only downloads the files needed plus can pause/resume and repair if a download fails, custom archive format to allow for patching, binary difference and also compression with encryption and also a windows service that talks with the client over IPC to get around UAC to install content.Another aspect of my role was to perform research and development on possible features that could improve the client. Such features researched (but not currently implemented) involved a chat client using XMPP with a java server backend, an in game interface using openGL/direct X and also third party API’s that games could use to communicate to the Desura client and also binary patching system to minimise downloads.
