Omnigen provides genetic profiles directly to consumers. With a DNA home test people can obtain their own DNA sample which is analysed by Omnigen and people receive an online portal with their results. My role as a freelance consultant at Omnigen was to explore and implement new genetic markers to their current products. Furthermore I evaluated which future products might be feasible technically and which could be marketed.

DNAisyou markets the direct-to-consumer products from Omnigen. My role as product specialist atDNAisyou is to support their sales and marketing activities. I am responsible for the accuracy of their scientific statements and provide the information needed to inform customers.

I use primary dorsal root ganglia in a co-culture with astrocytes and oligodendrocytes to determine the effect of astrocytes on myelination. These rat and (transgenic) mouse co-cultures provide insights in the lipid metabolism of oligodendrocytes and the role of astrocytes herein.

To test the potency of mouse induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in vitro, I use primary dorsal root ganglia co-cultures in which the myelination of these cells can be studied in pursuit of stem cell therapy for childhood white matter diseases.

This research project looked into glial fibrilary acidic protein (GFAP) expression of astrocytes in a mouse model for Alzheimer's disease. The practical work included cryosectioning of mice brain, immuno-fluorescent cytochemical staining and qPCR.

This internship I researched the role of reactive oxygen species in Multiple sclerosis gaining expertise in (primary) cell culture, immuno-fluorescent histo- and cytochemical staining, cryosectioning and enzyme reaction assays.

This internship included the investigation of population genetics and evolution in two closely related species of lizards by allozyme assay, DNA sequencing and microsattelite analysis.

This internship involved fermentation culturing of bacteria, and enzymatic assays on the cell lysates to investigate the ammonium assimilation in E. coli.
