I use principles of geochemistry, hydrology, and chemical engineering to design, monitor, model, and troubleshoot water treatment systems for clients. I develop and lead experiments and sampling & analysis plans for field and lab systems, collaborating with academic and commercial labs. As a Team Lead in Geochemistry and Hydrogeology, I oversee and advise technical consultants who are involved in multiple projects in the western US.

* Design and advise on research projects related to biomineral formation: current projects involve infection-related kidney stones, controlling biomineralization to seal fractures in the subsurface, understanding how SRBs contribute to the geological record in marine environments, and visualizing how single-celled organisms form carbonate minerals. * Use techniques such as ICP-MS, SEM, XRD, high temperature and pressure reactors, and various biological techniques.

Duties include i) advising Honors students about research and graduate opportunities, ii) organizing the MSU Freshman Research Symposium, iii) developing programs with the Office of International Programs, and iv) serving on the Dean’s Advisory Board and the Presidential Scholarship Selection Committee.

* Consult with industrial companies and government agencies in North and South America, mostly in the mining industry* Review documents, model biogeochemical effects, and advise on strategies for land use and permitting applications* Develop and apply biogeotechnologies in the field for contaminant remediation and resource optimization

Used molecular-scale methods at the University of Copenhagen NanoScience Center and the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-organization (Goettingen, Germany) to understand how minerals and water interact and evolve over geological time.

I conducted experiments as an undergraduate and graduate student using a variety of porous media reactor systems to assess the phenomena of biofouling and biologically-induced mineralization. The research was funded by the Department of Energy with broad implications into potential environmental contaminant remediation strategies and carbon storage.

I worked with Chilean researchers on various biotechnology projects ranging from engineering solutions to prevent the spread of diseases in salmon farms disease to remediation of petroleum contamination. I also provided English translational services.
