Advancing the state-of-the-art in energy and health care through application of power conversion technology. Current research is focused on delivering efficient, high-power density converters for wind turbine, MRI applications.

Co-lead efforts to establish electric propulsion technology development direction for future shipboard plants.

Control Systems Development: Design, develop, deploy, and support control systems for advanced power electronic drives and permanent magnet-based propulsion motors. Perform roles of both a hands-on developer and an adviser to less experienced personnel.Power Electronics Development: Have overall responsibility for a power electronics research initiative with the goals of improving power density and power quality in power converters and motor drives at the ship propulsion power scale.

Power Equipment Design Review: Review of power equipment designs including vacuum switchgear, grounding techniques, protective relays, transformers, turbine generators, and micro grid-connected power electronics. Performed supporting analytical and simulation studies including: breaker switching voltage transients, transformer inrush current, protection algorithms, steady state load flow, power quality. Electric Machine Control: Lead a team of peers in the design of a field-oriented hardware in the loop (HIL) controller for an advanced permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM). Design process included: specification and procurement of hardware; development of functional requirements, work flow/breakdown, and schedule; design and Simulink code implementation of algorithms, network interfaces, protection schema, data logging systems, and operator interface; prototyping and debugging on a PMSM/motor drive test stand; generation of supporting documentation; and final qualification testing of the system.Power Electronics Testing: Served as lead drive operator in a high power, medium voltage power electronic motor drive test facility. Responsibilities included: training additional operators to use HIL PMSM controller, coordinating with facility operators and data acquisition personnel in the startup and shutdown of experiments, controlling a large PMSM in order to test motor drive, analyzing data to determine success or failure of experiments, performing failure forensics after system faults, and communicating daily operations to management. Also contributed to authoring and analysis for final test reports delivered to customer. Electric Machine Characterization: Designed and carried out experiments to characterize electromechanical behavior of PMSMs. Issued test report and analysis to customer in support of model validation and propulsion system design decision making.

Developed embedded systems for the control of laser write heads in a holographic printing system. Design improvements focused on rapid, precision control of electromechanical actuators using open and closed loop methods and reduction of noise susceptibility. Performed all aspects of system development including: specification development, circuit design, printed circuit board layout, materials ordering, circuit board assembly, testing, and integration into larger systems. Designs included: analog and digital circuits, micro controllers, software written in C and assembly, feedback control compensation, and electromagnetic noise reduction techniques.

Assisted in general information technology troubleshooting, application updates to enterprise software, and implementation of VoIP systems.
