My name is Logan Starkey and I'm a 19-year-old freshman at the university of Tennessee-Knoxville. I'm a Journalism major with a concentration in sports media at the College of Communication and Information, along with being in the Sports Analytics Club and Academy of Global Scholars. My first job was working part time at a local combination KFC/Taco Bell in my hometown Smithville, TN. I started as a cashier but ended up working in various spots including as a chicken cook, and Taco Bell line worker. WIth my first job I gained so many valuable skills, foremost of those being flexibility. Despite being hired to be a cashier I was eager to learn more positions to not only ease the needs of management, but also expand my own opportunities. I also learned key communication skills with both team members and customers. I became a more engaged listener and that helped key in my focus on accuracy and speed. My next job opportunity came from school. I graduated from high school a semester early, but I still attended my schools sporting events, one of whichI received an incredible opportunity at. A teacher at my high school did local radio for our sports teams, but needed some time off for medical issues and, knowing of my avid sports fandom, asked me to step in fo him. After a couple trial runs with said teacher I was tasked with calling a handful of games on my own. Through this opportunity I learned to become more comfortable with public speaking, which had previously been a weakness for me. I also learned to be a more descriptive speaker through this opportunity, due to the fact radio listeners can't see the on court action I had to learn to include every important detail possible in a quick manner to keep up the pace but also make sure the listener was informed. My most recent employment was through FirstBank, where I was a teller. I had chosen to go to school for finance and wanted to explore banking as a career avenue. I picked up some key skills during my time there, mostly bridging the communication gap between different cultures/generations than mine. I also learned had to learn in depth knowledge of banking regulations and why they're important for the bank and the consumer.
