Profile bio

About Logan Schmitt

Hey, I'm Logan! I am a data professional and mechanical engineer. I've spent the past year studying data analysis, modeling, machine learning, and solid data practices. I have worked as a mechanical engineer and I'm eager to leverage that experience as I grow professionally. I believe my skillset and natural curiosity make me a great fit for teams that have to come up with creative solutions to unique problems. The ideal role for me would leverage all my areas of expertise while also providing room to learn and grow. How did I get here? I loved my calculus and physics classes growing up, so it seemed like a no-brainer to study mechanical engineering. My time as a student at Colorado School of Mines was instrumental in sharpening my ability to simultaneously see the big picture of a problem and also dial into the details of the solution. I also wrote my first lines of code as in college, programming Arduino Unos and implementing numerical methods in MATLAB. Coding seemed intimidating to me so I was shocked to realize that these classes were among my favorites.Later, while working as a mechanical engineer, I found myself at a crossroads. I was working in a role where I needed data to inform an organization's decision-making, but didn't have it. Furthermore, I didn't even know how to get it. As I researched solutions, I began to learn more about the world of data and the massive growth that was happening therein. I realized that a data science toolset is a fantastic complement to my engineering background. I can approach a problem like I would as a mechanical engineer, but I get to execute the solution in lines of code instead of physical materials. I still build out products and processes, document them, and deploy them with a skilled team of specialists. By combining the fields, I can let my expertise in each domain help guide my decisions in the other. So far in my data journey, I have focused on building my Python skills to execute each step of the data science process, from data acquisition, cleaning, and exploratory analysis to feature engineering, modeling, and deployment. I'm very comfortable with NumPy, Pandas, Seaborn, Jupyter, and scikit-learn. I've also explored data analysis tools like PowerBI and data engineering principles so I can be a well-rounded team member. I am excited to use my experiences and tools to strive for efficiency and optimization in the workplace. Combining data and engineering allows me to understand what questions to ask in order to truly understand where a process can be streamlined and improved.

Listed skills include Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and 10 others.
