The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC) is a national organisation who has been working for more than 50 years with a mandate to encourage safe participation in land-based outdoor activities. The Partnerships Advisor Alpine was a key role within the organisation and was responsible for leading MSC’s work where it relates to relevant alpine partners or alpine based outdoor recreation participation. The Partnership Advisor Alpine role focused on maintaining longstanding positive relationships and multi-agency facilitation with a range of organisations, operators and stakeholders including; other national organisations (our partners), government organisations, alpine and snow based commercial operators, the many industry professionals who work in this environment, and most importantly, the public who choose to recreate above the treeline in New Zealand’s great outdoors. The role included operational leadership of the New Zealand Avalanche Advisory (NZAA), and Professional Avalanche Information Exchange Platform (InfoEx) and oversight and facilitation of the development of avalanche training, recording and communication standards. Along with this the Partnerships Advisor Alpine was the MSCs representative on the New Zealand Snow and Avalanche Committee (NZSAC), which work collectively to ensure avalanche sector communication, provide expert guidance and support for the sector, aim to further avalanche education and promote avalanche and snow related research in New Zealand. Throughout the summer months this role required the maintenance and updating of avalanche and snow related systems along with the development of other summer based safety initiatives. An example of this is the organisation, facilitation and development of the Alpine Hiking Safety Videos.

Japan

I had several job roles in Powder Recon. As Powder Recon Japan is a small boutique side country ski company in the Japanese Alps, customer service was of utmost importance. My primary job title was manager of daily operations and avalanche safety. Here, I was responsible for assessing daily snow conditions and weather plot observations as well as organizing and managing up to 15 staff and 60 customers to ensure daily operations ran smoothly. My secondary title was a ski mountain guide. In this position, my responsibilities were to guide small private groups through the side country in up to ten different resorts in the region. I was responsible for the health and safety of these clients, which therefore involved avalanche assessment and choosing specific areas suited to the group’s ability level.
