The experience I gained through acting as the support function to other NGOs allowed me to hone my marketing, writing and event management skills from a very different perspective. Having served in a charitable context myself, I could leverage off my own experiences to enable others the opportunity to go out and share compassion themselves though developing and maintaining a social media presence for the charity, organising international trips for groups and heading up many initiatives such as organising charity balls. Fundraising saw me find and equip ambassadors in the United Kingdom, as well as major donors, to support our international causes. Here I gained valuable experience writing formal proposals, working with databases, emailing and making crucial telephone calls to help the charity remain the pillar on which others’ invaluable work could be established. Beyond just the Home-Base group, I spoke in classrooms, assemblies and children’s homes - encouraging them to plan for their future and enabling them to hope through facilitating career guidance and individual assessments. I had the opportunity to host international teams, organise events and build relationships with sponsors.Developing a new course curriculum that combined educational, apprenticeship and life skill components into one holistic programme that was adopted by the Work-Base school, was certainly a highlight. I was instrumental in administering this by managing volunteers; hosting and presenting to major donors; and monitoring students’ progress throughout. It was a privilege seeing the first class graduate successfully, as I was involved from the very inception throughout its implementation. Finally, during this time I formed part of a government sponsored committee that reviewed potential models on a regional level for teenagers who have aged out of children’s homes. Our findings were then presented at government level. Show less

At the school, I assisted in the development of new strategies for integration and educational development, while teaching students English, Maths and Life Skills. The opportunity to apply my Education and Psychology Honours degree by helping children with trauma integrate with their peers inspired me to manage Home-Base.
