Director Of Public Relations And Managing Director Of DevelopmentAmerican Medical Student Association Aug 2003 - Jun 2010Mclean, Va, UsI worked as a one-person PR shop, under the mentorship of a kind Executive Director. Stepping into this role, I had no idea what noise we would make or what change we would bring! Within medical education, I have had the chance to alter history in small ways. I created the original one-person PR campaign that grew and ultimately became the Physician Payment Sunshine Act, banning pharmaceutical reps from “buying off” doctors and medical staff. When I was approached by the actual Johns Hopkins whistleblower, I had to take a creative approach to doctors working too many hours. Our approach changed the entire medical industry, which is NOT easy to do. Basically, doctors used to have to pay their dues and work 100+ hours as they became a “resident”, sort of like “fraternity hell week but for four years.” If they could survive, they would be thrust into a lifetime of money and comfort. But working without breaks, aka: performing surgery and risking patient lives was suddenly unacceptable. It is now illegal. -
