I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering. It was told that civil engineers made the targets and mechanical engineers made the weapons to shoot the targets. Good proposition to a young college kid because making targets didn't sound interesting. As someone who was only in the mechanical side of the machines, I never got to understand how the machine worked or how intricate all the components worked together to make a machine function. One thing lead to another, and now I am a controls engineer. With that said, I have great expertise in mechanical machine design, but I also have the knowledge of machine functionality from internal electrical design to PLC ladder logic allowing the machine to function. As Henry Ford says, "Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young." Controls Engineers are always adapting to the never ending technological updates that come with existing technologies and I always try to keep my mind young.
