During my internship at Victaulic, I served as a Fire Suppression Intern and worked on two primary projects throughout the summer.1. Vortex BOM Application: I developed a web application using ReactJS to create a Bill of Material (BOM) for multizone Vortex System designs. This involved calculating part quantities, emitter types, discharge times, and oxygen levels for each zone based on various input parameters. I also utilized SQLite to extract data from the Victaulic Vortex hardware database and generated .VORTEX files for seamless integration with the Victaulic Tools for Hybrid Systems application, which is used for the design and 3D modeling of hybrid systems.2. Stepper Motor Control Loop: In this role, I used C++ and the Powerstep01 library to establish an interface between a Nucleo-F401RE microcontroller and a bipolar stepper motor connected to a needle valve. I developed a custom control algorithm employing PID tuning techniques to ensure precise pressure adjustments while implementing safety features to enhance the pressure valve's reliability, including safeguards against overheating, stall conditions, and emergency stops.After my internship, I accepted a position as a co-op where I continued to work on these projects as well as assumed other responsibilities.3. Victaulic Vortex R&D, Testing, and Data Acquisition: I worked alongside a team of 4 engineers as we developed and tested the Victaulic Vortex hybrid fire suppression system. My primary role was to ensure the accurate acquisition and analysis of data during product testing so that we could verify all components of our system were functioning as expected. Our goal was to set an industry standard as well as exceed the necessary qualifications required for commercial production. I achieved this through the use of the National Instruments DAQ hardware and LabVIEW software, which allowed me to monitor and record water flow rate, temperature, and pressure levels in real-time.
