Long was instrumental in the transformation of long wave infrared imaging from academic science to commercial product. At Essess, Long worked with technology delivery and go-to-market teams to help drive commercial applications for scientific discoveries across multiple products and industries. As one of the world’s leading authorities on high resolution infrared (IR) imaging, Long co-developed the company’s first energy loss detection application: a high-throughput imaging collection and energy loss analytic solution for building envelopes. Essess was chosen as a 2012 Sustainia100 company as part of the World’s 100 of the most outstanding sustainable solutions.Long's achievements include: • Successfully raising over $7 million in initial seed and Series A funding as an MIT graduate student. • Initiating, developing, and deploying disruptive technology to reduce the average cost per thermal audit ($1 per audit) based on rapid mobile thermal imaging technology. Long also introduced the concept as scalable technology to develop a national energy database targeted at Residential Energy Efficiency. • Designing, developing, and delivering a 100% digital real-time vehicle based synthetic aperture imaging solution (7 LWIR cameras (30 FPS, 16-bit) w/ integrated sensors, IMU, and GPS on a local PC-based DVR) • Organizing, hiring, and leading engineering efforts, developing proof-of-concept systems, and demonstrating successful product development of hardware/software platform solution for the first citywide thermography scan of Cambridge/Boston.
