About Long Luu, Phd
I'm an engineer turned psychologist and then turned ML/AI scientist.I started out as an electrical engineer with a heavy training in technical skills (math, programming, data analysis) and with a quantitative mindset in solving problems. One day I came across a paper that uses a rigorous mathematical framework to study human brain. It immediately struck a cord in me because I had been an avid meditation practitioner with a deep interest in understanding human mind. I decided to dive in and learn about that topic in depth.Which led to exciting journeys in the PhD program at UPenn and postdoc training at Columbia University where I have studied how humans make decision with experimental and computational approaches. I have learnt not just about human mind (and brain) but also valuable skills such as project management, team working, critical thinking, innovation, effective communication and above all a rigorous yet intuitive approach to understanding and solving complex problems.During my postdoc at Columbia, I had a great chance to learn more about machine learning, esp. deep learning as applied to brain and cognitive science. That valuable experience led me to appreciate the power of modern AI as well as its potential harm if not used properly and responsibly. Therefore, I decided to explore the opportunities to apply machine learning in an essential real-world problem. That led me to my current position with AstraZeneca in which I will deploy the state-of-the-arts AI technology to improve the quality of healthcare.General skills: communication, time management, team work, project management, strategic planning, creative problem solving, conflict resolution, stress management.Technical skills: behavioral experiment, computational modeling, quantitative analysis, programming (Matlab, Python, R, C++), machine learning, statistics.Jobs of interest: machine learning, AI, data science, healthcare, biotech.
