This position provides support to the Animal Care and Operations Supervisor with the daily operations and management of the gnotobiotic animal facilities to include training, supplies ordering, isolator maintenance, and resource scheduling and allocation. The Gnotobiotic Specialist requires specialized skills associated with the care and handling of animals; sanitation of facilities in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and internally established policies and procedures; and performs basic and advanced technical animal procedures under minimal to no supervision.Assist the Animal Care and Operations Supervisor in managing the projects and equipment utilized in the gnotobiotic facility, including development and design of specialized animal environments and recommendations for gnotobiotic husbandry practices and procedures. Provide gnotobiotic training to animal technicians, research staff, and veterinary staff to include, but not limited to: facility training, proper equipment use training, sterilization of supplies. Build, repair, and troubleshoot gnotobiotic isolator issues. Provide daily care and maintenance for animals that require unique skillsets or highly specialized management, oversight, or housing systems such as gnotobiotic animals. Performs animal housing, isolator and procedure area sanitation, recognizes normal environmental room parameters and reports abnormal conditions to the appropriate individual in a timely manner. Recognizes normal clinical appearance and behavior of animals and reports any concerns to the veterinary staff or designate.
