  • Evolution Recruitment Solutions
    It Director
Evolution Recruitment Solutions Sep 2004 - Dec 2016
    Warrington, Cheshire, Gb
I spent over a decade in recruitment, bringing a strategic angle to an industry that too often neglects its data. I started as a contractor and ended as IT Director. You may be surprised by where the achievements listed below took place (Recruitment often outsources IT departments) but I assure you they did. In order of decreasing pride (apart from the last one) they were:• Prestige: my team became Microsoft Gold Partners – unique within that size and sector• Cost: I devolved a one-time six-figure (10% of T/O) dependence on third parties to zero• Strategic: I ascended to board level where my voice was respected • Strategic: every quarter I stood in front of the entire 150-person business and explained our data strategy, what we’d achieved and where we were going (this was by popular demand!)• Innovation: I increased the size of the IT team to 14 (justified) heads• Innovation: I increased the size of Data Science team to 6 heads• Succession planning: as is often the case in businesses that grow rapidly, I became a “local hero” and because of this I had to retro-fit my own redundancy. (Actually the most difficult thing I achieved.)• Technical: I introduced many technical aspects to the business, for example, machine learning, business intelligence and agile project management in the form of Kanban . This is by no means an exhaustive list. • Automation: sales pipeline, market maps, wages • Sales: because of being a pro-active member of the Manchester data community I regularly – and perhaps improbably – contributed £100K+ to the bottom line in the form of leads. (For recruiters reading this: I even did a deal!)• Last, but my favourite, Statistics: I was once in a room full of sales directors arguing between themselves about whether we should be using a median or a mean. I built that.
  • Evolution Recruitment Solutions, Australia
    It Director
Evolution Recruitment Solutions, Australia Aug 2013 - Nov 2016
    Sydney, New South Wales, Au
Evolution's Australian office turns over in excess of $1M(AU). It was an honour to be there right from the start. In terms of the data model the key challenges were:• Maintenance window reduced from 10 hours to 2(TWO) hours• Latency to UK at 300ms ("no, I can't make it go faster than the speed of light!")• Man-managing the ******* time difference (not specifically a Data challenge but hard enough to warrant a mention)
  • Evolution Recruitment Solutions Pte Ltd, Singapore
    It Director
Evolution Recruitment Solutions Pte Ltd, Singapore Aug 2011 - Nov 2016
    Singapore, Sg
Evolution's Singapore office turns over in excess of S$2M. In terms of the data model the key challenges were:• Introduction of VMWare VDI infrastructure • Extremely different corporate culture (yes, the data model needs to handle this)• Managing the change to a 24/7 support infrastructure (having previously serviced onlya European enterprise)
  • Evolution Personalvermittlungsgesellschaft Mbh
    It Director
Evolution Personalvermittlungsgesellschaft Mbh Aug 2010 - Nov 2016
    Magdeburg, De
Evolution's Germany office turns over in excess of €1M turning a very significant proportion of that into profit. At time of writing the company is six years old. In terms of the data model the key challenges were:• Retrofitting language/currency• Cultural changes (for example, it is rude to begin a German email with "Hi")• Pronouncing the company name
  • Oxbridge Answers
    It Director
    Oxbridge Answers Aug 2010 - Nov 2016
    Boston, Massachusetts, Us
Oxbridge Answers are a Market Leader in providing the World's Highest Calibre Business Intelligence professionals to global organisations, looking for Competitive advantage through Talent Acquisition. From a data perspective Oxbridge represented an interesting challenge in that we had to extend the model to allow for competing companies all of which used the same back office. I enjoyed the challenge but by God it tested me*.When you work hard at one goal there is usually a secondary impact. In this case the primary impact was that we got Oxbridge Answers running; the secondary impact was our pioneering Database as a Service model.I am extremely proud of the work we did to implement Oxbridge Answers and, with Dan and Steph at the helm, it couldn't have been for more worthwhile people.*Technical note for SQL types: the day I changed 3000+ stored procedures dynamically remains a technical highlight and a project management low-light PS yes, it worked!
  • Lbm
    Data Manager
    Lbm Aug 2002 - Nov 2003
    Altrincham, Cheshire, Gb
I entered LBM with the remit to take over management of their Market File. This was the central database used by this B2B marketing giant and, as such, the source of a very large percentage of the company revenue. At the time of my arrival the database had been upgraded from Access to SQL. It was my job to make this complicated system manageable at a more rudimentary level (large amounts of database, and thus company, knowledge were privilege to only the author of the system). This included complicated import/export processes and a bespoke branching mechanism. I established an upkeep routine consisting of simple data management tasks that, I believe, are followed to this day. This was absolutely vital as the B2B industry relies on up to date data.In addition to this, it was my responsibility that all of the data sold by LBM was (a) clean and (b) fully audited. This included the inception of a contact opt-in campaign and the management of the data that was returned from it.
  • Inter.Act Systems
    Data Analyst
    Inter.Act Systems Aug 1999 - Apr 2002
I was in charge of the automation of the Inter.Act business reporting suite. This included the parsing of large amounts of data from Inter.Act’s own campaigns in addition to EPOS data from Sainsburys and Boots EPOS system. I was in charge of the analysis of this data.Initially my responsibility was to report to the Account Director with top line data analyses they could present to clients in graphical/top-line form. I attended client visits (to, e.g. Boots, Procter and Gamble) in this capacity. As an account management tier was introduced to the company, however, my role mutated into one where I automated these reports (Excel/VBA, Business Objects) hence allowing the Account Manager to produce them. Although report production had moved away from myself (i.e. was automated) it remained my responsibility to provide a statistical interpretation of this data and, on occasion, visit the client
  • Mark Bratt Travel
    Author
Mark Bratt Travel Sep 2000 - Apr 2001
When I was 23 I wrote a truly awful travelogue, but I wrote it nonetheless. For my fortieth birthday Mark Bratt (of Mark Bratt Travel fame) published it and gave me it as a present. I am writing this now to commend the generosity of that gesture (the book itself is woeful!)

  • John Dickinson Stationery Ltd
    Data Analyst (Internship)
John Dickinson Stationery Ltd Jul 1996 - Sep 1996
    Gb
My first job in data. There was only one PC and when I had to go and get raw data I obtained it from a black and green behemoth un-ironically known as The Other Computer. The pile of floppy disks on my desk was generally referred to as The Data. However, the sales team I worked in contained some of the best analysts I ever met. Simply, their database was their collective brain. What this taught me was that having the information was one thing, asking the correct questions of it, quite another. I wrote about this here: http://lookatyourdata.co.uk/2016/09/24/what-i-talk-about-when-i-talk-about-data/
  • Nat West
    Assistant Project Manager (Internship)
    Nat West Jun 1995 - Sep 1995
    Gb
The youngest man in the City of London. I did a bit of everything as an assistant/runner in Nat West's Acquirer Systems department. Surrounded by extremely effective project managers this internship gave me a very good grounding in business, instilled in me the concept of professional pride and gave me good habits that I embrace to this day.In a slightly weird turn of events, I actually introduced the department to the fact they could access the internet. It was a sign of the times that they sent the most junior employee to find this out! I allude to this experience in this blog: http://lookatyourdata.co.uk/2015/04/23/definitely-macro-the-glory-years-of-excel-and-how-to-recreate-them/
