Founder & CEO of Rasa. Mom of 2 boys. Lifelong seeker of health and boundless energy. My life has taken some wide turns, but I've always had an obsession with energy. After dropping out of college, I moved to Costa Rica to caretake a wildlife refuge in virgin rainforest. There was no electricity, and the nearest 100-person town was a two hour boat ride away. I once walked 5 hours to make a phone call, fording a river known to have crocodiles to get there. I was surrounded by both beautiful and deadly things. I became intimate with the power of nature, and developed a profound respect for its energy and our place within it.In my early 20s, I took initiation into a Kashmiri Shaivite Tantra lineage, and spent the better part of a decade in deep study and practice of Yoga, Ayurveda, & meditation—spending a total of 6 months in retreat. Midway through that journey, I felt the pull to bring my practice into more direct benefit of the world at large.I went on to co-found two climate solution companies, worked with Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room, lobbied at the United Nations, spoke at TEDxBerkley, traveled to a total of 26 countries, and, finally, started Rasa.I started Rasa during the most stressful year of my life—I had inadvertently joined (and quite advertently left!) a cult, had emergency back surgery, moved across-country, lost a family member, had an emergency Cesarean birth, and a huge fallout with my family…& now had a baby.I needed something to keep me going, but when I tried coffee, it left me with jitters, anxiety, and even worse sleep. Hard nope. And the available coffee alternatives either weren't energizing enough or weren't delicious enough.I saw a market opportunity and partnered with an herbalist to create Rasa: coffee alternatives that use herbs instead of caffeine to energize. And are freaking delicious. At Rasa, we're here to transform the way you energize—and set a new standard for sustainable business…with love. What started with me elbow-deep blending herbs in my kitchen has now served over 10 million cups worldwide. Join us!

I was lucky enough to provide strategic direction and biochar market development support for this project that seeks to improve the soils and airs of Haiti by using clean charcoal stoves in homes and biochar in soils.
In my capacity at TBC, I helped launch the world's first consumer biochar product, Soil Reef™, for which I directly secured placement into the NE region of Whole Foods. I was additionally responsible for marketing, positioning, copywriting, industry relations, and business model strategy.
Samavesha produces an "Art In Nature" event every year that is so impactful that it inspired the City of Berkeley to name an actual city holiday after Samavesha's Founder: Laura Inserra Day (Sept 15). I was lucky enough to serve on the board and help Samavesha in its early days.

I was the only woman on a team of 10 working to develop light industrial equipment to produce high-quality biochar. My role encompassed market development, fundraising, PR, & investor relations. I was directly responsible for us presenting our technology at the UNFCCC in Poland in 2008, and I played a critical role in our business being a finalist in Virgin's Earth Challenge. I lobbied for biochar at UNFCC COP-14 & 15, dumped a wheelbarrow full of biochar onstage in front of 1400 at TEDxBerkeley, did opening and closing speeches at international biochar conferences, and was generally dubbed "The Biochar Queen." BEC was acquired in April 2011.
Washington, Dc, Us
I ran the Carbon War Room's Biochar Operation, an ambitious project to scale both biochar production and market development—with the support of policy initiatives—to achieve significant carbon impacts. I worked closely with stakeholders—from State governments to the World Bank to soil and climate scientists—to get biochar on the map of their programs. The project was eventually shut down on account of biochar just being too early for the level of scalability CWR wanted to see at that time.
Global Cooling is a non-profit organization dedicated to the research and development of technology to stabilize the earth's temperature by increasing cloud albedo by misting atomized ocean water into low-lying clouds. I worked for the company on a project basis, writing grants and fundraising.
