A key member of the Strategic Information team within the Global Immunization Division’s Strategic Information & Workforce Development Branch (SIWD). Senior Program Officer for the Animal-Human Interface Project (AHI) within the National Center for Emerging & Zoonotic Infectious Diseases. Position encouraged interagency collaboration, preparedness and response to outbreaks of zoonotic diseases. Veterinary Resident Advisor for 153 residents spanning 5 cohorts in the newly formed Nigerian Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (NFELTP). Focused on highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), anthrax, brucellosis, leptospirosis, food-borne diseases, mycotic diseases, neglected tropical diseases and emerging/re-emerging infectious diseases.• Provided expert technical assistance and teaching in emerging infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases, public health emergency response, pandemic planning and response, and advanced epidemiology.• Coordinated outbreak response activities related to zoonoses and emerging/re-emerging infectious diseases and supervised NFELTP resident responders.• Expanded NFELTP program over 300% in 2011 from 13 FELTP residents to 40 per class in 2012. • Provided leadership and technical expertise toward implementing an NFELTP One Health curriculum, course content, learning objectives and core competencies.• Secured internal and external funding to investigate infectious diseases at the animal-human interface and to provide support for investigation of zoonoses and emerging/re-emerging infectious diseases in NFELTP program, in particular, research into detection of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases transmitted between bats, domestic animals and humans in regions of southern Nigeria. • Provided expert abstract review for recommended acceptance to the following conferences: the biannual African Field Epidemiology (AFENET) Conference, and the biannual TEPHINET (Training Programs for Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network) Conference, and the Annual EIS Conference, International Night.

• In the role of Avian Health Veterinarian, worked collaboratively with federal and local agencies to conduct and coordinate disease surveillance and outbreak response activities related to zoonotic avian diseases: - Oversaw complex surveillance for avian influenza and Salmonella pullorum disease in backyard flocks and commercial poultry operations throughout Washington State.- Worked collaboratively with USDA, CDC, and Idaho state officials during an outbreak of avian influenza H5N8 in a southwestern Idaho poultry farm, September 2008.• Coordinated and managed all activities of the state’s National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), including recruitment of new flocks, flock inspection and testing, and facilitating compliance with testing requirements at fairs and poultry exhibits.• Developed training programs and educational materials to improve knowledge of zoonotic disease prevention and control among public health workers and epidemiologists, practicing veterinarians, and poultry producers.• Collaborated with state and federal agencies, industry, and private sector partners to promote disease prevention and control in poultry by providing leadership, direction, and technical advice on farm biosecurity practices and surveillance of avian infectious diseases, in particular, avian influenza.• Provided expert advice and technical expertise to improve practices and procedures for poultry disease control and prevention based on most current research reports; worked with state veterinarian to evaluate and appropriately amend state regulations for animal disease control and animal importation, especially with respect to poultry.

• Responded to disease outbreaks in collaboration with CDC, state governments, and host country governments; outbreaks investigated include:- Avian influenza H5N1, Nigeria, April 2006 – developed, coordinated and lead an emergency response team to conduct enhanced surveillance of human influenza-like illness in regions of Bauchi state with reported outbreaks of avian influenza in poultry.- La Crosse encephalitis in children living in western North Carolina, October 2005 – Developed investigation protocol and conducted enhanced surveillance to identify children with encephalitis and made recommendations for control.- Acute flaccid paralysis during a dengue fever outbreak, Rondonia, Brazil, March 2005 – Worked collaboratively with Brazil’s Ministry of Health and Field Epidemiology Training Program to investigate a neurological disease of unknown etiology to provide epidemiologic advice and consultation on the identification, diagnosis, and control of arboviral infections.• Served as co-investigator for an epidemiologic study to identify etiologies and possible risk factors of unexplained encephalitis in Bangladesh - provided technical advice, coordination, and oversight for 4 study sites located throughout Bangladesh. • Conducted a complex data analysis and evaluation of ArboNET surveillance data using appropriate statistical methods to determine temporal relationships between early West Nile virus surveillance events and occurrence of human disease.• Responded to physician and public inquiries regarding arboviral diseases, requirements for yellow fever and Japanese encephalitis vaccinations, and possible adverse reactions.
