Monitoring reproductive output of the California least tern and western snowy plover withpresence/absence surveys, nest searches, nest checks, collecting survival data on chicks, anddocumenting all cases of mortality, human impact, and predator activity. This included proceduressuch as area searches within a grid delineation of the colony to determine numbers as well as thebehavior of the target species using binoculars as well as the naked eye. More active surveytechniques consisted of finding nests and marking with a unique identifier on a stake, recordingpositional data on a handheld GPS unit and then returning each visit to monitor nests throughoutthe breeding stages.Sites I have worked at around San Diego Bay comprise of those located on the U.S. Navy Basefrom North Island down to the northern edge of Silver Strands State Beach and are used byapproximately 1400 breeding pairs of California least terns (2008) and 70 breeding pairs ofwestern snowy plovers (2007). Camp Pendleton had 1604 breeding pairs of California least ternsin 2008 and in 2007, 94 pairs of western snowy plovers were found.2008 – Approximately 250 hours monitoring at Camp Pendleton with over 1400 Californialeast tern pairs and approximately 25 western snowy plover nests. Responsible forconducting surveys, documenting depredation and disturbance and coordinating withother monitoring crews throughout the sites. As well as above listed survey techniques.2009-2010– Approximately 200 hours each year at Camp Pendleton conducting surveys and tasks as described above, coordinating with other site managers, assisted in training studentinterns, and becoming more experienced with California least tern and western snowyplover breeding behavior and colony observation.
