The Franklin School of Innovation is a Title-I, public charter school that follows an EL model of learning. In addition to vertically aligning the English department and co-creating standards-based assessments school-wide assessments, I've also taught 9th grade English/English honors, poetry, philosophy, a class on Youth-led Particpatory Action Research, and Crew --an advisory like program that seeks to become a school-family. Along with my teaching responsibilities, I initiated and continue to organize and facilitate an annual overnight trip to the Green River Preserve for approximately 85 9th graders, helped students found an official TEDxYouth conference, and serve on our school's racial equity committee. I also helped students found our school's publishing house, and we currently have two editions of poetry for sale through Barnes and Noble. In all things, whether it be department work, co-writing a professional article with students, leading a collective-impact protocol or making hot chocolate for a reading celebration down by our creek, I aim to be relational and human-driven in all that I do. As a cancer survivor I have been so deeply supported by the communities in which I have participated, and sometimes that support came years after I had moved on. Under the advisement of Ruth Vinz and Bob Fecho, I worked with the Student Press Initiative to help students in high-needs communities in the Bronx and Harlem to create professional books. Additionally, I was a research assistant and helped code and organize data from an oral inquiry process, which was published in the book Novice Teachers Embracing Wobble in Standardized Schools (Rutledge 2021). I was also twice selected as a Zankel Fellow.

Over the years I taught English 9, English 9 Honors, Dramatic Literature, Philosophy, Drama, and Language Arts 6. In addition to teaching, I directed and stage managed for the Drama Department, coached Forensics and Debate, co-sponsored Peers and Leaders, chaperoned various National Honors Society service trips both locally and internationally.
