Litigated on behalf of HRDC’s two periodicals, Criminal Legal News and Prison Legal News, in censorship and public records actions against jail and prison facilities across the country. Served as primary internal counsel on consumer and federal FOIA cases. Co-counseled with solo practitioners, regional non-profit organizations and large national firms.

Oversaw litigation and legal advocacy at the West Virginia affiliate of the ACLU. Litigated issues in federal and state courts including the enforcement of government transparency laws, jail and prison conditions, trans rights, and the rights of people who are housing insecure. Provided legal analysis to ACLU-WV policy director, worked with coalition partners, outside co-counsel, other ACLU affiliates, and served as primary spokesperson on litigation to local, regional, and national media.

Advocated for economic justice for West Virginia individuals and families. Represented clients against banks and other large institutions in foreclosure matters and other consumer issues, including Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcies. Researched civil litigation approaches to combating the criminalization of poverty, including challenging wealth-based pretrial detention in the court system.

Focused on consumer protection law, including foreclosure defense, bankruptcy, debt collection defense, used car and mobile home issues, and landlord-tenant cases. Litigated issues involving the Kentucky Consumer Protection Act, the Kentucky Retail Installment Sales Act and Motor Vehicle Retail Installment Sales Act, the Truth in Lending Act (Regulation Z), the Real Estate Settlements and Procedures Act (Regulation X), and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Researched and wrote memoranda and motions on issues including family law, administrative law, and consumer protection law. Assisted attorneys at Title III senior center visits, courtroom appearances involving family law issues, hearings, and at a monthly Domestic Relations clinic that assisted individuals representing themselves pro se in family law matters. Handled communications efforts surrounding Domestic Relations Clinic, including creating social media presence for Paducah office, writing press releases, and communicating with local media.

Researched and wrote memoranda supporting the organization’s goals of ensuring a diverse media ownership environment and public access to political advertising filings. Attended meetings with ally groups and on Capitol Hill.

Prepared policy briefs for the Commissioner and her advisors regarding issues including broadband reach in rural communities, media ownership regulations, and access to affordable telephone services for people who are incarcerated and their families. Interacted with industry counsel and consumer groups.

Interacted with internal clients and researched and wrote memoranda on intellectual property issues, media law, and regulations governing non-profit entities.

Evaluated comments and reply comments in rulemaking and other notice-and comment matters, and worked on matters relating to the policies, programs, and regulations of the FCC, Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and the Spectrum Competition and Policy Division.

Drafted memoranda on issues including exclusions to the hearsay doctrine, potential Brady violations, voir dire guidelines, and which scenarios meet the “exceptional circumstances” provision of Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 32.

Managed editorial staff and freelancers at a national monthly magazine. Oversaw budget, coordinated photo shoots, and wrote cover stories and features on event and marketing trends.

Wrote and edited content for two microsites created for one of company's top clients. Served as lead editor and project coordinator for events related to the microsites, including directing and editing a show daily at at the Consumer Electronics Show. Wrote white papers and handled other editorial projects for clients. Edited magazine’s twice-monthly newsletter, contributed articles to the magazine and coordinated web duties.

Wrote and reported feature and department stories about the event marketing industry, including articles on sponsorships, mobile marketing tours, and trade shows. Edited and proofed pages before publication. Served as the web editor, posting breaking news and magazine content to our website. Launched and handled Twitter account for magazine. Assisted in developing content for program tracks at annual conference.

Wrote and edited news stories about the meetings and hospitality industry. Proofed pages and represented the magazine at press functions. Wrote and posted items for a meetings and event industry blog.
