GeoDES intends to be Congress' go-to academic ally to build on technology and data modernization in the House & Senate. It will also offer community workshops to share knowledge and bolster skills at the local level in service of a more accountable, representative and effective government.

How will the United States re-imagine, renew and strengthen democracy in the 21st century? What roles will technology and data have in our shared future? As a Georgetown faculty member, I led the congressional modernization portfolio and also supported the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress in the House of Representatives. The Committee successfully passed 202 bipartisan recommendations, the majority of which are implemented or in process. I advised staff and members, provided testimony, helped Congress adapt to pandemic conditions and move through the violence of January 6th. I also developed the curriculum Shape=> Structure=> Share: a roadmap to digital public infrastructure in US Democracy with accompanying “how-to” guides (see below under publications)

Working in between the national security and open technology programs, I examined congressional informatics and Congress' ability to: 1. handle information overload in an increasingly complex, volatile and saturated decision making environment and 2. knowledge management modernization efforts that support rigorous public policy making

The Real Security program trained women leaders across the USA, both Democrats and Republicans, to both understand and communicate effectively on today's national security issues.

This program, located inside Congress, covered the waterfront on modern security issues. From cybersecurity to nuclear risk reduction and from terrorism to peacebuilding, we examined contemporary issues with "on the ground" experts to supplement the oversight and deliberation process in Congress. The group met hundreds of times and included thousands of Hill staff and policy professionals during its tenure. The Henry L. Stimson Center is the permanent home of this program., where I was a Senior Associate.

I created "Security for a New Century" a bipartisan, House-Senate study group to examine new global security issues and provide continuing education for Hill staff. I led this program for 9 years in collaboration with several House Members including Rep Lynn Woolsey (CA), Rep James Leach (IA) Rep Elizabeth Furse(OR) and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair Senator Richard Lugar (R, IN).

SCICN exists to educate the Stanford community about decision analysis, peace building and conflict resolution. The organization has partnered on campus and internationally to design peace processes, including in the Middle East, the Caucuses and with Ireland and the United Kingdom.
