The objective of a CGIC is to accurately identify intelligence to assist in the identification of armed violent offenders for investigation and prosecution. This identification process is complete by using leads from crime gun evidence cartridge casings run thru the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network. CGIS distribute crime gun intelligence and by merging NIBIN hits, tracing results, ANR multiple sales, NICS and local intelligence to the proper authorities. By utilizing crime gun intelligence from the NIBIN system, specialists are able identify national and regional trends and patterns. I2 intelligence gun supply charts are created to include subjects, addresses, vehicles and aircraft. The crime gun intelligence packet is distributed to: ATF Field Divisions - Field Intelligence Groups, Local law enforcement intelligence and Designated authorities. Additionally, it is the responsibility of a CGIS to be an ATF liaison support outside the office to state and local law enforcement. The CGIS formulates statistics from the NIBIN MROS Compliance and Audits system. NESS data-driven research concepts are utilized for internal and external academic research opportunities.
