Leader Of Magnets Group
Magnet Engineer
Phd Student At Cern And Graduate School Of Computational Engineering
The research project is carried out at CERN, investigating the implications of the use of high-temperature superconductors in high-field accelerator magnets for the future circular colliders. For the analysis purposes, dedicated numerical formulations and models are to be developed, in order to evaluate the magneto-thermal dynamics behaviour of such magnets. The output of the numerical models will support the design of the HTS-based prototype magnets the associated protection devices, and the superconducting circuits for the future accelerators.
Research Fellow
I have been part of the Machine Protection and Electrical Integrity group, within the Technology Department (TE-MPE-PE). The duties of the group are to support LHC operation and maintain state‐of‐the art technology for magnet circuit protection, for both the present and future accelerators. Main contributions:1. LHC circuit modelling - I encoded the circuital model (PSpice) of the LHC dipole’s main circuit into netlists, to automate the model’s construction. This ensured a prompt analysis (24h) in case of faults events;2. ANUBIS – I developed a tool in Matlab to support the post-processing of the LHC quench-heaters signals, to automatically assess their integrity, reducing the manual work required to the operators;3. STEAM – A project aiming to simulate the electro-thermal dynamics of the LHC superconducting circuits, combining sub-models via cooperative simulation algorithms. I took care of the formulation and implementation in COMSOL of a numerical 2D magnetothermal dynamic model for low-temperature superconducting magnets. Moreover, I developed a Java framework called SIGMA for automating the construction of the magnets models.
Junior Automation Engineer
My duties mainly concerned the end-to-end development of automation software (PLC and SCADA, mainly in Siemens environment – Step7, WinCC) for the control of industrial processes in the steelmaking industry. Moreover, I provided technical support on site, during development and all the phases of the commissioning, such as I/O tests, troubleshooting of hardware and software, functional tests, and personnel training. Main contributions:1. SCADA/HMI (InTouch) - Vacuum Degasser - ArcelorMittal - Ostrava (CZ) ;2. SCADA (InTouch) - Electric Arc Furnace - Vallourec - Valenciennes (F) - commissioning (4 months);3. SCADA (iFix) - Continuous Casting Machine - Timken, Ohio (USA) - commissioning (3 months).4. SCADA/HMI (WinCC) - Continuous Casting Machine - TISCO, China.
Internship At Elettromedia S.R.L.
Development of a Genetic Evolutionary Algorithm, coupled with Comsol Multiphysics FEM software, to obtain a stochastic multi objective optimization of professional loudspeakers.
