I was born and educated in South Africa, where I completed all the requirements for my Ph.D. in Plant Pathology at the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa. In 2000, I joined the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) at the University of Pretoria as post-graduate student where I succesfully acquainted myself with most aspects of plant pathology that include mycology, pathology, taxonomy and molecular technology. My dedication to plant pathology and mycology resulted in numerous published articles on these topics in internationally rated journals as well as presenting talks and posters at international conferences as attendee or keynote speaker. I have mentored several undergraduate and graduate students in FABI and the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiveristy Institute (formally the CBS Fungal Biodiversity Centre), Utrecht, which has also resulted in co-authorship on several publications. Additionally, I have presented courses to undergraduate students as guest lecturer in mycology and environmental microbiology at the University of Pretoria. I have been part of the research team of the Evolutionary Phytopathology group, under the leaderships of Prof. dr. P.W. Crous, for the past ten years, which further built my experience in the fields of plant pathology and mycology. This has allowed me to build an extensive international network with renowned scientists in the fields of mycology and plant pathology, locally and internationally. As coordinator (2010-2012) of the European Consortium for the Barcode of Life (ECBOL), I had the opportunity to further develop my skills in organising conferences and applying for research grants at national and international level. This also allowed me to build research networks with international scientists in other scientific fields.
