I taught documentary work, photojournalism, ethics & photojournalism, picture editing & page layout, and other courses. I developed the course Community Service Documentary Project, which worked collaboratively with inner city youths and adults, as well as juveniles incarcerated in the state system. Whenever I could, I have built my courses around social issues and community service. Classes have explored the subjects of community, work, affordable housing and poverty; in a dynamic, evolving collaborative project, “Democracy Through Photography.” five students and I co-developed a curriculum and taught photography and community building to a group of youths at the North Street Center in Rochester, which works to develop young leaders in the neighborhood. An interdisciplinary course, Images for a Social Dialogue, staged a month-long gallery installation, “Unseen Neighbors,” with speakers and publications that made a notable contribution to the community dialogue on homelessness.Most of my photographic work, such as "Songs From the Heartland," "the voyage," "around Banta" and "Simple Pleasures," takes the form of long documentary projects. In the past few years I have been documenting dissent in our country for my project "This is What America Looks Like."For six years, I photographed extensively at a correctional facility for juveniles and taught a photography class as a volunteer there; a large part of my work continues to address children and crime, the criminal justice system, and larger issues related to youth and violence. I've been photographing, writing and working with homeless people and those around them. The issues related to chronic homelessness are complex; my work attempts to explore the complexities as well as to help individuals share their experiences and environments.Specialties: My photographs and writing have been published and exhibited in galleries, museums and public alternative exhibition spaces around the country.
