For over three decades, I served as an Attorney in the United States Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, progressing from Trial Attorney to Deputy Assistant Attorney General. During this period, I enforced federal civil rights laws preventing discrimination on the bases of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, citizenship status, and disability in the areas of employment, housing, lending, voting, education, and public accommodation. I also enforced laws addressing police misconduct, protected the constitutional and/or statutory rights of persons residing in public institutions, such as prisons, jails, juvenile detention facilities, nursing homes, psychiatric facilities and hospitals, and prosecuted individuals for committing hate crimes. In addition, I provided leadership in policy-making and the promulgation of legislation and regulations. To be successful, I developed relationships with stakeholders from across the spectrum, including high-level government officials, non-governmental organizations, businesses, the public, and Division staff.
