About Loretta Smith

✦DYNAMIC FACILITATOR WHO GALVANIZES AND ENGAGES PUBLIC/PRIVATE/CORPORATE STAKEHOLDERS ✦Throughout my career I have worked tirelessly to build coalitions between public, private and corporate stakeholders that drive positive change in traditionally underserved and underrepresented communities. My ability to merge emotional intelligence with determination, courage and forthrightness have enabled me to deliver results that have positively impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of stakeholders as a Multnomah County Commissioner, Senior Policy Advisor to U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, and as a small business owner.I am a passionate and capable communicator and advocate who has represented the voices of underserved clients and constituencies to decision-makers who craft the policies, procedures and reforms impacting matters of social justice. I have a talent for quickly assessing needs, identifying opportunities and spearheading initiatives that secure funding—including from the multi-trillion dollar federal budget—to create level playing fields, bridge the digital divide and foster economic development.✔PROGRAM INNOVATION—Pioneered youth employment program targeting underserved youth, and aimed at stemming gang violence including securing $50K in initial funding and growing $2.2M in permanent funding and 650 participants. My efforts that tripled youth employment was recognized with a nomination for the Obama Administration’s “Champion of Change” award. ✔PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP—Led President Obama’s White House Business Roundtable for young entrepreneurs and small business owners in 2011. Championed, and garnered majority approval to pass an amendment that provided the first public dollars in Multnomah County to fund seed money for women and minority owned tech startups. This included the funding of a company that went public and was sold to a Private Equity firm for $25M in two years. I also created the Multnomah County Business Advisory Council. ✔COALITION BUILDING—Convened an Interfaith Peace and Non-Violence Summit to address an unprecedented spike of violent incidences in the county. The summit galvanized the community and produced a resource guide providing residents with connections to social services, government, and faith leaders. ✔ADVOCACY—Advocated for and secured monies in the 2009 stimulus bill as a staffer to U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, for a $2B federal amendment to revitalize Head Start facilities nationwide.
