Pennington Foundation, Louisiana’s largest private family foundation, Bertman’s strategic leadership and vision enables the foundation to further its mission in support of health and human services, coastal restoration, social and emotional learning, disaster recovery and the arts. Bertman is co-founder of Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), the only full-time resource dedicated to helping donors make strategic disaster-related giving decisions. After a decade of service as CDP’s board chair, she transitioned to chair emeritus in 2021 and continues to serve as an ambassador for the organization . A global force in the philanthropic community, Bertman is an innovative thinker and expert in disaster philanthropy. She is a highly sought after speaker, writer and consultant, lending her passion and expertise to the larger conversation around the need to affect systemic change and make an amplified impact on the human experience particularly within marginalized communities. Her work has positively impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals, families and communities across Louisiana and the world.A hockey enthusiast, Bertman is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame 2021 Fundraising Strategy Cabinet.Highlights of Career Contributions Include:▪ Co-founded the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (Washington, DC), the first-ever international organization whose sole mission is advising donors on high-impact, long-term disaster giving.▪ Collaborated with local, regional, and national funders to grow $1M into $45M for relief and recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina (2005).▪ Conceived and launched the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Alliance to unite Louisiana’s philanthropic community with federal and state partners to develop innovative disaster recovery solutions.▪ With the support of Walmart, launched the CSIS-Pennington Family Foundation Series on Community Resilience. Series culminated in the submission of a white paper to Congress.▪ Created the Pennington Disaster Resilience Fund, a first-of-its-kind fund dedicated to proactive disaster philanthropy.▪ Identified strategic partners to contribute a total of $16M to create the Themelios Fund to support innovative medical research. ▪ First funding partner to work with FEMA team on a disaster site in the US Virgin Islands.
