Ritual Mischief is a community-centered herbalist studio at Silly Dog Studios on Whidbey Island, WA. We love and offer playful community, emotional support, and rekindling relationships with the land here! Working with local plants, roots, lichen, and windfall tree branches and buds, we make herbal self-care, home-care, and pet care offerings such as balms and salves, lip balms, lotion bars, soaps, shampoo bars, dish soap bars, body oils, dog shampoo bars, sleep pillows, shower steamers, and more. We sometimes co-host local makers markets to support our people community too. Visit www.ritualmischief.com to learn more or shop our small-batch herbal offerings or visit our herbal studio in person on the west edge of Langley. • Silly Dog Studios
    Managing Partner/Chief Poeting Officer
    Silly Dog Studios 2016 - Apr 2020
    Whidbey Island, Wa
We make our living hosting creativity, writing, photography, home-canning and other fun workshops, retreats, gatherings, and a writers grotto out of our studios here on Whidbey. Daniel also sells his amazing photos, teaches photography elsewhere (PCNW, CreativeLive, KelbyOne), and he does 1:1 photography mentoring for clients around the world. I'm also an essayist/poet/interviewer who creates and sells books. I'm also an apprentice herbalist in the Wise Women tradition who creates & sells salves, soap, & body oil crafted from the plants and trees who partner with us here to deepen relationships with plants. We're working on a workbook series about how to woo wonder and awe back into your world. I sometimes help others with creative projects as a coach/guide/friend. Now and then I edit books, teaching and training materials, and marketing materials for others--but only for friends. We recently released my eighth book, called Unshaken Wonder: Becoming Playful Elders Together. I'm a researcher at heart, so it's a collection of essays, games, conversations, stories, and poems that demonstrate how playful elders tap into the unshaken wonder at their core every day. It's for adults feeling exhausted and depleted by work, family life, their cultures, politics, and/or the state of the world right now. If you're in the Pacific Northwest, come see us at Silly Dog Studios on the edge of Langley (www.sillydogstudios.art). Just call, text, or email if you want to come by. We're a 5-block stroll past donkeys, deer, and rabbits into lovely Langley or a quick jaunt over to the beach, Bayview Farmers Market, a blueberry farm, or about 100 other cool places. We have a host of new workshops in the works for 2020. Sign up for our mailing list to hear about them as they arrive! As it turns out, when you live on an island and there's no night life after 7 p.m. most of the year, you can get quite a lot done. ;-)
  • Collective Self Coworking
    Story Wrangler & Space Runner
    Collective Self Coworking 2009 - 2017
    Central District, Seattle, Washington
Collective Self was my personal blog documenting ways that humans currently survive, thrive, and pull forth transitions (with experiments in coworking, care partnering, writing, community revealing, storytelling, play, and self-organizing groups). Collective Self evolved to become the name of our Seattle home, which became a free community coworking space in Seattle's Central District neighborhood. For several years I hosted free community coworking. In December 2013, I passed the torch to Nicole Southwell, who moved into our Seattle home as we moved on to Whidbey Island. In March 2015, Elyse Gordon took over from Nicole. We sold the home in November 2015 and said goodbye to the space. The space was relaxed, fun, and different every week. The community supported many of us in our work, as we came to see each other as work partners, friends, and resources. I still host coworking sometimes out of our home on Whidbey and by appointment, so the spirit of Collective Self Coworking lives on!

Co-invented a neighborhood-spanning event around a 2-mile temporary hopscotch path by combining neighbors' desires to meet more neighbors, have fun, make the neighborhood safer, and change perceptions about the neighborhood being dangerous. More than 40 events emerged around the route - from yard sales to flea markets to carnivals to Guinness Record attempts -- making for a neighborhood-wide day of adventure and fun. The event has become an annual neighborhood tradition and is now led by Centerstone.
