Working in Milwaukee has been one of my life's great joys. Having taught in MPS since student teaching, and with experience across grade levels 6-12, I have enjoyed seeing the complex realities and challenges that come with working in an urban setting. I have successfully taken on various leadership roles including interview committee, building committee, MTEA building rep, learning team, department chair, and facilitated professional development seminars for staff at the building and district level. Recently, I became a National Board Certified Teacher after having been a Milwaukee Writing Project Teacher Consultant, and I have presented research findings for both UW Milwaukee at NCTE and my own research at WIABE and UW Milwaukee Writing Project Conference on the teaching of writing. Throughout the 2018-2020 school years, I participated in an onsite institute with the writing project as well, and studied works by Zaretta Hammond, William Strong, and Sharroky Hollie which informed our cohort and teacher inquiry workshop and research while striving to improve culturally responsive practices in our own rooms and instruction. An avid user of Donors Choose, I have obtained several grants to bring more diverse literacy choices, as well as relevant texts to curriculum. I solicit students' voice in choosing texts, and help them balance both what is interesting with what is rigorous. I also employ exit surveys so students can give feedback, advice, and suggestions for curriculum from year to year which I use to reflect on and revise my curricula from year to year. In my building, working with a team, we created, designed, implemented, and improved the cell phone policy and collection plan. From nuts and bolts to policies and procedures, I helped to ensure the success and fidelity of the goal-- no more digital distractions in the classrooms. This has transformed our school in amazing ways. My favorite grade levels to teach are 9 and 11, and I relish working with both entering students and AP Language and Composition students. I have cooperated with several higher ed institutions and coached student teachers since 2012, maintaining relationships with them, and helping them to achieve their personal and professional goals. Having recently obtained my Master's Degree, I hope to eventually continue my education further. In the meantime, I will continue my personal research, and improve my classroom practices.
