About Lori Dorfman

Lori Dorfman is director of Berkeley Media Studies Group, a project of the Public Health Institute. Dr. Dorfman oversees BMSG’s research on news and advertising, media advocacy training for public health advocates, and professional education for journalists. She teaches mass communication and public health at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health. Her research examines news portrayals of various public health issues, including children’s health, nutrition and agriculture, food and beverage marketing, paid family leave, racial discrimination, violence, and alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Dr. Dorfman conducts training for grassroots organizations and public health leaders and consults for government agencies and community programs across the U.S. and internationally. She publishes articles on public health and mass communication and co-authored the major texts on media advocacy. She edited Reporting on Violence: A Handbook for Journalists, which encourages journalists to include a public health perspective in violence reporting, and leads an interdisciplinary team that conducts workshops on violence reporting for newspapers and local TV news stations.Specialties: At BMSG, we specialize in asking the hard questions that help public health advocates focus on their goal and frame their issue effectively. Then, we help them gain the skills they need to participate in policy debate through the news. To do this well, we study the media, including news and advertising, and apply what we learn to media advocacy training and strategic consultation so advocates can make the case for creating safe and healthy environments

Lori Dorfman, DrPH, directs Berkeley Media Studies Group, a project of the Public Health Institute, where she oversees BMSG’s research, media advocacy training and strategic consultation, and professional education for journalists.
