During my time at Elmira College, I volunteered weekends and evenings for Compeer, a mentor program providing social support to individuals with mental illness. Compeer was my first experience in mental health. My intrigue grew from there and influenced my choice to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a Minor in Human Services. After Elmira College, I moved to Philadelphia and worked for Clubhouse, providing onsite job training to clubhouse members and developing employment contracts with local employers. Wanting to learn best practices for behavioral health, I applied to graduate school at Bryn Mawr College. At Bryn Mawr College I earned my Master of Social Service and completed two field placements at Hahnemann University Hospital before transitioning to Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA). As a Mind Body Medicine Therapist at CTCA, I counseled patients, couples and families seeking emotional and psychological support throughout oncology treatment and end-of-life planning. Through family meetings and interdisciplinary rounds, I advocated for patient needs while providing psycho-education and psycho-therapeutic support. In session (both private and group-based), patients processed anxiety, depression and concerns related to mortality; here, patients taught me gratitude and reminded me that life is precious.
