My mission is to help Arlington homeowners, renters, landlords, and small businesses reduce emissions from buildings in Arlington in equitable and effective ways, with a special focus on lower-income and other marginalized groups. This position is funded by a Community First Partnership grant.

I help people who want to reduce the carbon footprint of their homes learn about heat pumps and related technologies. I also provide logistical support to other heat pump volunteer coaches and clients.

I am currently co-chair of First Parish Arlington's adult religious education committee. I organize, support, and lead programming of many kinds (social, spiritual, intellectual, etc.) for adults.I served as Clerk of the governing board for six years (2013-2019). In 2012 I started and then coordinated First Parish Arlington's Mass Incarceration Working Group. We worked in coalition with dozens of other groups statewide to pass a comprehensive criminal justice reform bill in April 2018, promote restorative justice, and otherwise help end mass incarceration in Massachusetts. I have led more than twenty adult religious education programs related to Islam, including a four-session course on the history of the world through Muslim eyes. I have preached many times at First Parish Arlington and a variety of other Unitarian Universalist congregations. I have also served as chair of the Property Committee and as a member of the Climate Action Working Group.

My interests are varied, but the common theme is that I want to engage, and to help other people engage, with the big and challenging questions of our time. I enjoy learning and teaching, writing, editing, giving talks, leading worship services, leading discussion groups, reading and thinking. I have taught dozens of adult education classes through the First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Arlington, Arlington Community Education, and the Rainbow Lifelong Learning Institute. Topics include the global history of slavery, the history of the world through Muslim eyes, and gardening. I have published three books and numerous articles: "Gender Inequality in Our Changing World: A Comparative Approach" (coauthored with Roger Clark and Desire Ciambrone, Routledge, 2015), "Reinventing Marriage: The Love and Work of Alice Freeman Palmer and George Herbert Palmer" (University of Illinois Press, 2005), and "Lydia Maria Child: The Quest for Racial Justice" (Oxford University Press, 2002).
