About Lori Lawson

Taught for Semester at Sea (SAS), a ship based international university with 400-500 college students from all over the world. We circumnavigated the globe twice. The 1st multi-month around-the-world voyage was in the spring of 2018 and 2nd in the Fall of 2019. In addition to teaching small seminar courses, co-taught - along with a historian and an oceanographer - Global Studies, the one course required of all 400-500 students on the ship. My teaching on land included stints at University of California Davis, Sonoma State and 15 years at Montana State University, where I taught at the Jake Jabs College of Business & Entrepreneurship, the Honors College & the College of Letters & Science. The primary academic focus of my work has been on intercultural competence (IC) and political polarization. I designed/taught several IC seminars and upper division courses, including:* The Cultural Dimension of International Business* Film, Photos & Culture: A Global Perspective* Going Global: Intercultural Skills for World Travelers* Happiness: A Global Perspective* Quest for Understanding: Polarization, Poverty & Progress."I served as the faculty advisor for MSU's International Business Club (IBC) and a faculty mentor for the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) and was hired as the JJCBE Internationalization Project Coordinator. In addition to university courses, offered intercultural workshops designed to increase participants effectiveness in cross-cultural situations. A few of the organizations worked with include: Engineers without Borders (EWB), International Teaching Excellence and Achievement, and The Tibetan Small Business Program.Workshops varied in length and included mini-lectures, group exercises, TEDtalks and Intercultural Competency assessments. Instruments offered include the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) the Global Competency Inventory (GCI) and the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). The IDI is considered the most statistically reliable and valid measurement tools available for understanding intercultural competency.

  • Montana State University
    Montana State University - Faculty
Montana State University Aug 2004 - Jan 2020
    Bozeman, Montana
Designed and taught courses with the primary goal of increasing student's intercultural competence and their ability to work with cultural - and political - differences. Taught in the Honors College, the Jake Jabs College of Business & Entrepreneurship (JJCBE) and the College of Letters & Science - Liberal Studies. Previously taught at UC Davis and Sonoma State University.A few of the courses I designed and taught include: "BGEN 245D - The Cultural Dimension of International Business" and "LS 451 - Film, Photos & Culture: A Global Perspective" and "LS 301 - Going Global: Intercultural Skills for World Travelers." In 2016 - in an effort to explore the increase in political polarization - I designed and taught a small seminar class called "LS 101 - Quest for Understanding: Polarization, Poverty & Progress." Teaching that class during the 2016 elections was a challenge, but also at least a semi-success, in that the students - who represented the entire gamut of political opinions - managed to discuss issues with civility, curiosity and at the end of the semester, a better understanding of those outside their own tribe . . . which is at least a start!
