Universities and libraries are treasures to be celebrated and defended. I've worked in higher education since 2002, helping institutions tell their stories online. As the University of Rochester’s first centralized web developer, I have more than 15 years’ experience with user research and testing, accessibility, user experience and interface development, and assessment. I’ve worked on teams large and small, led and managed projects and people, and learned to collaborate and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization and with varying levels of subject matter expertise. Throughout my academic and professional career, I’ve always had some connection to (and love for) libraries. As both an undergraduate student in Pennsylvania and a graduate student in Seattle, I worked in libraries as a student employee. In my work for Microsoft’s first Internet search projects, I was part of a team of indexers and librarians working to organize the Web in its very earliest days, developing and evolving taxonomies and structures for a growing database of websites. These connections and my affinity for the work of librarianship led me to pursue a master’s degree in library and information science at Syracuse University, which I completed in August 2014. As a web developer, news editor, digital media director, and now social media director, I have had to adapt quickly during my career to rapidly changing technologies, expectations, and needs. Change can be exciting; it can also be uncomfortable and challenging. I’ve worked hard to help manage that kind of change by keeping my own skills sharp while also trying to understand where a team’s knowledge and resource gaps might be and then stepping into that gap to provide support and service.
